I've seen a lot of threads about nice knives but what I'm looking for a batoning capable under 12" overall length fixed blade. With a decent sheeth. I just picked up a Boker Magnumb Elk Hunter for my pack because it was around $30 but now I'm thinking there may have been a better option out there.

I have a BK2. I love that knife and use it often. I'm looking for an inexpensive knife for one of my packs that I won't mind losing.

if you don't mind a taiwanese or chinese knife, then the boker magnum elk hunter is a good solid choice on a budget. i think it fits the role you are looking for perfectly.

i think the bucklite max also fits that role should you want a comparably priced knife for another pack.i think the buck paklite caper is a handy knife too.

and any minute now, someone will tell you to get a mora

I use a cold steel Bushman sheath knife for my bug out bag. I have seen tests of it that show its a very tough knife, plus its light. You can get it in two different shaped blades and two kinds of sheaths. But its less than $30 so it may not be as nice as what you want.

I don't really know about the Boker but for less than $50 I would look at Cold Steel, Condor or Schrade.

lol, what is? certainly not a KA BAR. A real one is made of 1095 high carbon steel. 440 stainless is the cheapest garbage around, that I know of. Maybe the make cheaper but I have no use for garbage.

Agreed. 440 is (usually) complete chi-chong worthless junk steel.

There are many knifes for 50 & under that are good. I love cold steel personally because they are cheap & good.

Biggest things I would look for is steel, anything but 440 or 420 should be fine & full tang unless you want a folder. Beyond that, its up to you.

Me personally for 50ish I would buy this

Amazon.com : Ka-Bar 2-1211-6 Blk Fighting :... cover
Amazon.com : Ka-Bar 2-1211-6 Blk Fighting :...
Or this

Amazon.com : KA-BAR 2-1236-9 Bowie, Stacked... cover
Amazon.com : KA-BAR 2-1236-9 Bowie, Stacked...
But, all up to you.
