Just curious to know how many like minded people we have on here from my general area. How many of you are in rural settings and how many reside in towns? What do you feel like are the biggest threats to our area as a whole and how are you preparing for those?

Meth heads and druggies in general. They are the biggest threat to our way of life right now. Forget the Russians, an EMP or an economic collapse. Druggies pose the greatest risk.

Recently relocated from Topeka to the Pittsburg area. Live in a rural setting close to town though.

I live in SE Kansas on the edge of a city.

In my opinion, since the economy has picked up a little, the risk of trouble is going down. But yes, I agree that drug addicts are a real risk

Have since moved into Pittburg. Don't really know anyone here yet, other than my wife's family a couple of neighbors and the people I work with.

True that. It's a great area to farm in, some of the best hunting in the state, some of the best fishing as well if you know where to find it, but the meth-head and junkie issue is real. It seems most people are honest hardworking Christians around here but there are enough druggies to cause some problems with petty theft. I had a chainsaw stolen from my building site before my house was done being built, now I have some trail cams to catch potential intruders. Happy to see there are some other preppers in my neck of the woods though. Whether you're prepping for meth-head home invasion or the apocalypse, either way the conclusion of having a gun at your bedside makes perfect sense.

In my opinion the biggest threat to SE KS if SHTF would be the hordes of Kansas City people fleeing south in the event of something bad happening. Whether it be pandemic, EMP, solar flare, nuclear event, famine, fuel shortage, or anything comparably catastrophic, Kansas City people would try to head for warmer pastures, and on their way they would pass right through us, marauding everything in their path, hunting to near extinction our game in a matter of weeks, and fishing out our streams and lakes until moving on like a horde of locusts to more southerly places where they think they might be able to find more food.

The second biggest threat would be our local governments. In a serious shortage of resources it is likely the local governments would declare food storage to be "hoarding" and then go house to house confiscating any extra food to be put in a central location to be distributed to the families of the politicians and those who didn't prepare. SE KS is a highly armed society, and once people are starving it wouldn't be hard for a local sheriff or city councilman or mayor to round up a posse of a few hundred armed and hungry townsfolk and start going house to house. Although some folks would likely resist food confiscation, few would be able to stop or even consider stopping several hundred people suddenly deputized showing up at their property with guns, people who themselves would likely have family in the area who would reprise any violence towards their kin. We would all be told by our small town politicians that this was an emergency measure being done for the common good. If food distribution was interrupted for any reason, this would likely happen over and over again in various locales within a few weeks as the townies ran out of food.
