I need a little help with mylar bags and o2 absorbers please. I am in college and have VERY limited space, so I've decided to just buy 1.5 gallon bags to store my preps in and stash them places around the dorm. I figured I can fit a lot more of them places than I can with 5 gallon bags in buckets. So my question is, what size o2 absorbers do I need to put in a one gallon mylar bag? And how much rice can fit into one of these bags? I heard 8lbs but I wanna make sure.
I would use 2L plastic bottles personally.... There's a thread on it knocking around. Can pop an O2 absorber in the top if you want, I do this and rotate my rice/beans etc in and out of the bottles. Cheap and easy to store .
Plastic 2L bottles are not sufficient for long term storage, as they don't provide a sufficient barrier to oxygen. It will be better than a plastic bag, but will come nowhere near a mylar bag.
You used that in a one gallon bag? Yeah I've thought about some of those mountain house cans. I am new to prepping so I wanted to try the pouches to see what kinds I liked first. Got a couple the other day from the new ****s sporting goods in my area.
For 1.5 gallon, a 500cc absorber should be plenty. 300cc is recommended for gallon bags, but a lot of us use 500cc in them. 1,500cc is recommended for 5 gallons, but a lot of us use 2,000cc. So 500 for 1.5 gallons works out to be right about in the middle.
I'm going to be using 500cc absorbers in the 1 gal. bags from now on. Of all of the 1 gallon bags I've done with 300cc, more than 50% of them still have too much air in them. I'm going to open them up and use the 500 cc - then reseal them.
