Just a thought but every year I spread peas, turnips and various grains on my pasture. I find the grains grow but not enough to harvest. The peas never make it and the turnips only produce along the driveway where my dogs patrol. Raising food is more than spreading seeds. Our small garden plots do well because we tend them spend a lot of time on them. I have a degree in Anthropology. Most people are not willing to eat the wild foods the primitive people ate, even if they could recognize the foods. Next time you harvest those two rows of black eyed peas and stash 5# of dried bean, thing how long those rows will need to be to produce 100# of beans.

However, in an urban setting do you still see those strategies as feasible?

Like say there are still hundreds of thousands of people in the city, say half the city's population has died and there is half a million to million people in that space still.
Don't let ANYONE tell you that you cannot make a stand in an urban setting. You can! Now, is it ideal, no, if its a big ass city ran by gangs. But you can make a stand if you are ready and able. There used to be good threads here about urban prepping with great ideas. Knowing what is there now and how to utilize it later is a very big factor in the case for urban survival. If you cant handle yourself "in the woods" now when times are good then don't go running off there when shtf. Figure out what to do where you are now.
