I have a bunch of apps on my phones, my tablet, and software on my computer that provide me with information for preparing for disaster, coping with disasters when the occur, and recovering from disaster after the fact.

My smartphone's least useful feature is as a phone. It is far more useful as a handheld computer and multi-tasking electronic instrument. It goes far beyond what the original Tri-corders on Star Trek could do.

Because of this, if anyone has a working Samsung S-4 smartphone lying around not being used, sent it to me and I will send you a thumb drive of all my stories.

Just my opinion.

Download and use Signal for texts.

I have a group with a couple fellow vets we use for " emergencys".

Would love to have a small survival group with SB as well for SHTF. It's secure and encrypted.

Hmm, there should only be one "Signal".

Blue icon with a white chat bubble?

Edit: it's called "Signal private messenger" sorry.

WhatsAPP is another one. You can make your secure groups, so your messages and attachments go to the group with what they claim is end to end encryption.
I don't think it is really as secure as they say however. Also lets you make wifi calls across it in case the cell phone service fails. (including video chat which is useful if you are trying to help someone fix something at a remote location.

Some apps might be useful if the phone system is operable.
In many hurricanes that's not the case.

WhatsApp isn't secure on the level Signal is.

You can hypothetically plot on harm to a politician on Signal and the deep state can't break into your conversation.

WhatsApp is not nearly as encrypted.

Earthquake detector and in some cases it may give an early warning. I don't know how widely it is currently used (more users = more reliable).

Need to ask my wife. She has the CME reporting app on her phone, its a paid service so its just on her phone.

Other than that I just have the usual on my phone.

I do have Active 911, which has replaced the pager for emergency services in my area, but its not available to everyone. Neat app though. I get 911 calls through it with "Leroy Jenkins" (a STOCK alert tone if you can believe it) with automatic mapping and tracking of all responders.

Solar Alert

The app itself is free but you need the $3/ year subscription to get alerted to incoming solar storms

We would love to see a "Jerry Young list" of your phone apps, and if you have time... the apps and disaster software for your computer, too.

I am saying "we" not because I have a mouse in my pocket, but I know I am not alone in my curiosity!

I will put one together, but it could be a while. I am not doing well at the moment and am so far behind on doing articles I have said I would do that I may never catch up.

I am adding it to my 'Articles To Do' list.

Thank you.

Jerry

I hope you feel better soon. Don't worry about that to-do list. Those who know you, appreciate you even without a keyboard.

Be well, my friend.
