I'm thinking that one's preps would have to be somewhere north of "outstanding" before one could even begin to think on a balloon.

When I saw the thread title I was thinking latex balloons such as for kid parties. Not a hot air balloon, or helium balloon.

And as noted earlier, if for reconnaissance, a drone would be likely superior.

Beat the native search function: Type "site:survivalistboards.com" in Google's search box, followed by search parameters. You can use normal conventions, limit by date, etc.

There actually is an official survival guide, but you have to write it yourself - and edit it as the situation changes - and revise it as you learn from your mistakes - and start all over again when things change again. (AceScanner)

Drones are pretty loud, least ways ones we’ve seen/heard out and about.

A balloon could be up for extended periods. Silent.

Perhaps even during daylight (my previous thoughts were night use only), if camouflaged well and at tree height. Perhaps on a ridge etc.

Less work/risk than climbing trees to set cameras, then could be raised higher at dark.

The intelligence with which they could provide over a large area could be a huge asset.

Agree with you on the costs aspect, but who knows on the tech/costs in another decade?

Shux, just look at FLIR availability today vs 5 years ago.
