I have the Ruger 96/44 , think lever action 10-22 that shoots .44 mag. It takes a 4 round rotary mag. plus 1 in the chamber . I don't hear much about them but I really like mine . I also carry 2 spare loaded magazines .

How is it to 50 yards without a scope? 100 yards with?

I have the lil marlin in the picture also. It is perfect for walking and hunting with a matching sidearm. It shoot accurately , it light and fast so what is not to love. Either of the Rugers the 96 or 77 would be a great rifle. The next new lever I buy will be a Henry. They are fine rifles an I want a .357 so bad.

I have a Winchester 1894AE with a scope. I've shot a few deer with it. It is the only thing I deer hunt with now...along with my Ruger Super Blackhawk which is also in .44mag.

I've had great success with this rifle; however, I've never shot it over 100 yards. I'm sure it could reach out to 150 if needed, possibly 200.

Not mine, but my favorite .44 mag lever gun, ever. Don’t look if you’re a true lever purist:

I have a couple of the older Marlins pre-safety in both .44-40 and .44 Magnum. They are both accurate and reliable. With the factory open sights you can shoot ten-shot, two-inch groups at 50 yards with good ammo and in proportion to 100 yards. A peep sight or low-powered hunting scope will have an inch off the 100-yard group size.

I also have an older Interarms Rossi and it is a good shooter, but is not drilled and tapped for peep sight and doesn't lend itself to scope use. It is a 4-5 inch 100-yard gun with factory open sights, adequate, but utilitarian.

My son's Rossi shoots well and we have not had a single issue.
I have an older H&R Handi rifle in .44 Mag. Excellent shooter.

Arch Stanton ,

I used to have a Leupold 1 x 4 scope on it and I really liked it a lot , then my late wife claimed it for herself when we went camping and since she had perfect vision wanted the scope taken off . At 100 yards with the scope on it I could hit a soda can almost every time, and at about 50 yards it literally splattered a rabid skunk on the first shot . I don't have the greatest eyesight plus being color blind , ALL of my rifles have scopes on them and I plan on putting a scope back on the .44 when I can .

Yeah I have also considered the .357 and that would definitely be my next option.

I doubt I'll ever shoot much past 100 and probably max out at 75 even with a scope. Poor eyes ain't getting younger

How is it with iron sights to 50 yards?

That is an amazing grouping and that gun is probably the one I am leaning most toward right now. That or the Henry and it's hard to justify the price on the Henry if the Marlin will serve just as well.

What's the price range on the Rossi? How well does it line up without a scope?

That's crazy good yardage. I can't even really see past 50 yards other than blurs and trees LOL. I doubt I would shoot anything past 35 yards without a scope. I am sure I could hit it but I could certainly not group anything less than 5 inches without a scope.

That is an insane gun and makes me want a Marlin more, even without the custom build.

We got ours for $350 used. Octagon barrel. Hit a pop can at 50 yards with the iron sights. For Ohio deer, more than adequate. YMMV

That seems like a great price, especially with the octagon barrelÖ such a classic look. Thanks for the information

I was digging around my ammo closet last week and found I have 2 boxes of 44 special ammo. 1 box of 50 44 special cowboy and 1 box of 20 Critical Defense.

Thinking I need a rifle to go with it...

I've had real good luck with my stainless steel Rossi 92 357 mag. Maybe I need a blued one in 44 mag?
