Amazon employs thousands of people to listen to you on Alexa. They say it's benign, but statements like that no longer ring true in this day and age. Might want to watch what you say..

I was just thinking, you could have some fun and put their no worries statement to the test. Start asking Alexa about things that would normally attract the attention of authorities and if you get a visit then what they said is false. Of course cover your back side with proof of what you're doing first.

I too would never have anything in my home like Alexa. Hell, there are already problems with smart refrigerators, baby cams and even smart TV's. These technologies are too easily abused..

I have nothing like that in my home specifically for that reason. I know people that do and I tell them, you know that thing is always on and listening, they say they don't care, they have cameras hook to them through wifi, the whole 9 yards, not only are people listening to them they are also watching them...

I have been saying this for years.

What gets me is people that seem to struggle financially have an Alexa.

I remember when VCR and movie rentals required expensive memberships. People I knew with hardly a pot to _ _ _ _ in where members.

I think we were the last people in the US to buy a VCR.

Here's another one to think about. Saw an ad for an Amazon home security system. It's completely wired, so given the Alexa thing you could potentially have someone watching you in your home as well..

If you have a smartphone, computer camera or a tablet you can be watched and listened to. So really it's no different.

That said, eavesdropping is not what this article is about. It's about the people who listen to the recorded prompts you give Alexa and then they transcribe them. You can look on you Alexa app and see every command you've ever given the device.

Not saying these devises aren't used for nefarious reasons. Just saying that isnt what this article is about.

If you're concerned about your camera spying on you, just go to Device Manager, and dump the camera driver. No driver? No camera.

When you get time check out the electric lock system Amazon is trying to sell.
Your delivery arrives at your door, the delivery person is verified and a person at some amazon location unlocks your front door so the delivery guy can step inside and leave your package in your house.

Anyone who’s stupid enough to buy into that deserves whatever they get

My wife receives a free Eon from Amazon. I think that's the name? You still ask Alexa on it. I make sure the thing is un plugged when I'm home. What I would like to know, does anyone know if there ais a battery inside so can still listen when it's unplugged?

We have half a dozen Alexa devices in our home, and I love them. Out in the country where I live, even some of my favorite FM radio stations are iffy. I don’t worry if someone in Seattle is listening to me trying to get Alexa to play the Doors in the living room. If you want, you can turn off her mic.

It's irresponsible and a primary violation of opsec to have a listening device in your home.

I'd also be cautious installing apps from providers of such devices on your smartphone (the Amazon app, for instance). If you want to shop on Amazon, use your laptop with a secure browser and a VPN. Because if you don't, not only can they spy on you, they can adjust the prices they offer based on the ZIP code they think you are shopping from. Lower prices for ghettos, higher prices for the suburbs.

You won't have one, but you'll have a smartphone, smart-tv, computer with camera/mic, smart thermostat, smart fridge, tablets, among a multitude of other things.
