Is it normal for a VPN (like TunnelBear) to ask you for the password to your device (computer/tablet, etc) every time you access their VPN service?

I can understand perfectly well they need to ask for the password to the VPN account, but my DEVICE? What the heck?

Does anyone here have any experience with TunnelBear?

If not, what are some good free VPNs out there?

(Edited to add: this is on an iPad, and not one of the devices that I posted my troubles about a couple of weeks ago.

I thought that TunnelBear asking for my iPad's password was over the top. TunnelBear supposedly has a good rep, and I suspect that it wasn't really THEM asking for my device's password, but more likely the browser was hijacked on that device.

What do you think?

There are no "good free" VPNs, only those less crappy. When something is free you are always the product/moneymaker. Here's the current reviews:
https://www.techradar.com/vpn/best-free-vpn
Of these I'd guess Windscribe is the best of the worst, but so far as I know, all mentioned are within the '14 Eyes' region (https://restoreprivacy.com/5-eyes-9-eyes-14-eyes/), and therefore suspect.

I don't have that VPN but I do have few iDevices...

Some apps that contain sensitive info require passcode at every start. My phones and iPad all have fingerprint reader so I just use that. Much safer, especially in public where someone can see your code over your shoulder etc.

My guess is that tunnelbear vpn also requires you to log in to the service every time and when you enter the device passcode it actually automatically fills the username/password in the background. I could be wrong though.

Howdy!

I’ve Looked into into purchasing one of the top rated VPN’s that are recommended. My question is to those in the know. I don’t use public WiFi we have iPhones and IPads with MiFi and also our own Verizon and AT&T hot spots we use to connect online. Is there a need for a VPN?

Yes, I also recommend paid instead of free because of save and secure browsing on the internet.
