Interesting, most folks are carrying just a knife. I carry a Leatherman Surge everyday. With work I use the pliers, scissors, knife, and screwdriver often. If I had to carry just a knife I'd be walking back and forth to the tool bag a lot.

The question I'd like to ask is what do you do with your EDC knife everyday? There is no right or wrong here, just curious. Do you carry it for self defense, cutting stuff, multi-tooling?

I've been playing with my Surge since getting home; monster of a tool, but I love the T-shank blade adapter. My EDC has slimmed down since coming home from Afghanistan, but I still find myself doing a lot of cutting chores around the house. That said, I find myself adding either a Leatherman CX Skeletool or the Leatherman Wingman to my weak-side pocket when at home or around town. When traveling out of town, I'm still carrying my Swiss Spirit X in a BlueForceGear single elastic mag pouch which is slim and secure:

My folder simply cuts, but I still find a lot of value in a multitool's pliers, scissors, file, and screwdriver tips. I used the cross-tip screw driver the other day since I was way out at the road using the weed-eater and needed to adjust the carburetor fuel line.

I also prefer scissors for more "urban" uses, which is mostly just cutting tags off clothing so I don't risk cutting new clothes with a blade

Sure, multitools are a compromise; however, they are the most convenient, portable, comprehensive EDC options that are much easier to have on your person when you need it.

To answer your question;

My knife, whatever knife I carry, has zero self defense use. It's very strictly a personal cutting tool. For defense I carry a compact handgun or two, or when I can't carry a gun when flying on vacation, my Irish blackthorn stick or hornbeam walking stick goes with. Even onto airliners. When I get to my destination, I stop off at a bog box store and buy some pepper spray and a box cutter. When I fly out, I give the pepper spray and box cutter to the guy driving the shuttle to the airport.

My knife does the following in my life as a retired old fart in Georgetown Texas; opens those infernal plastic blister packages, my mail, UPS boxes, trims fishing line when I fish almost every day, guts and cleans my catch of the day, cuts jute twine for the tomato plants in the garden, cuts pesky labels off stuff for my wife, cuts a large burger at The Revend Jims Dam Pub in half to share with my wife since senior citizens don't eat that much at a time. It will even cut a nice fresh doughnut from Shiply Doughnuts in half to split with my wife. Cuts down. on our sugar intake.

On hiking trips/woods walks, it cuts off baguette slices to make fresh sandwiches from the with the gouda cheese we have in our packs and slices off a corner of the little plastic mustard packs our senior citizen fingers can't tear off anymore. This is all done with a Victorinox recruit or small tinker, or even a executive. In my day to day life as a retired gentleman of leisure doing mostly fishing, woods walks, museum trips, concerts, and travel by car to Mission Viejo, California to visit the daughter and granddaughter, I don't really find a lot of heavy duty knife use in my life. Like I said, I'm an old fartnow and my ultra light backpacking days are way over. I know I'll never see real wilderness again, but that's okay, been there-done that. Now we enjoy seeing Yosemite and Yellowstone from the tourist bus, and

If I do need a heavy duty knife, then the small 12 inch machete in the car truck will do.
