anyway... when we had our last hurricane i put my old lionel trains up in the living room and taped cardboard figures to them so from the front road it looked like we were having a coctail party.....saw this in a documentary one time about a kid being home alone and it worked great to scare off the bad guys...true story..honest !
Did you also hang paint cans from a string and swing them down to face level when any intruders presented themselves? How about taking a blowtorch to the front door knob to deter those intruders from entering? Marbles on the front sidewalk?

Beatupoldcop,

Please keep your gay and lesbian fantasies off this forum and stick to the topic. We don't care if you are gay or your ex-wife is a lesbian. The point of the forum topic is to keep looters away from your house/preps. The looter could be anyone including your fantasy Humongous or the 7 kids that live across the street. If you care about your own well being and survival in the SHF if Law and order breaks down you should keep your gay preferences to yourself instead of bringing it up in your forum posts. In a major and long term SHF you should keep your preps to yourself unless your plan is to prep for all your friends. I like many other and the majority of prepper’s on this site are generous and would help out almost anyone in an emergency. Like many pepper's I have sacrificed my time and money to not just give it all away. I help out my neighbors all them time and would help anyone in the short term disaster event. Any long term SHF event all bets are off and I will not be feeding the 7 kids across the street when I have spent the time and money to feed my own family while they take thousand dollar vacations every year. -MV

You have some of your family or friends staying with you because you have a generator and a big wood burning bar-b-q pit. You are the only person in the whole neighborhood with fresh meat and a way to cook it. NOW, how do you keep it??

This is what I did after Hurricane Rita passed through my area

Have a couple of people stay up late at night. Have an outdoor fireplace in the front yard. The members that stay up late can have a nice camp fire right there in the front yard. If the power is off, everything will be dark, except your yard. Looters are criminals, and most of them do not want to go where they can be seen - kinda like roaches.

Have the blinds to your house open so people driving around will see you up and moving about.

Spread your cars and trucks out, park what ever spare vechiles you have in your neighbors driveway.

Do not cook inside, use your coleman stoves or bar-b-q pit in the front yard where people can see you. Make it look like you are having a party and having a good time - which you should be.

Be seen with a rifle or shotgun in hand or slung over your shoulder. Long arms are easier to see then pistols. It would be quit a sight for a looter to see you with an AR-15 over your shoulder, while standing at your grill cooking some steaks.
Sorry but why would I want them to pass by?
I have a large garden that could always use more fertilizer.
First off you WILL need to have a early warning system that is silent to all but the folks inside the home. It will work for free 24/7 both day and night to allow you to sleep in peace.
A day/night camera security system as well as a NVS should also help along with a backhoe to burry the bodies not suitable for the garden.

I have thought a store dummy laying in your doorway covered in fake blood might make bad guys look for an easier target.

Default Remember the NBC post-Andrew News Coverage:

What contained the looters there was people deploying rifles and shotguns openly as they guarded their turf. Everything from .30-40 Krag-Jorgensen carbines to AK-47s were visible. The decision to buy my first SKS was motivated by both that and the Rodney King riots.

My plan has always been to spray paint big plywood signs asking for food and medication, because we are starving and have a horrible virus. That and maybe throw our feces all over the front yard. Gotta be creative.

In my experience, after natural disasters it is best to remain out of sight and make your place look as uninviting as possible. And I sure as hell wouldn't let anyone see what firearms I had by carrying them in plain view! Tipping your hand takes away one of your biggest advantages, surprise. Experience shows that they guy with the obvious weapon should be the first taken out.

Personally, I'd stay indoors with someone watching the front and back from concealment. Black out windows, conceal your activities. Make your place hard to get into without a lot of noise and effort. If they try to gain entry just explain to them why it is in their best interest to move along or they'll meet your friends Smith & Wesson. If they continue, well, they were warned. Looters don't generally work too hard to gain unknown rewards, especially if there's a barrel pointed in their face. Like most burglars, they want to get in and out as quickly as possible, with as little risk as possible. If your place is more difficult than the next house, chances are good they'll just move along.

I drove by something the other day that would deter me if i were in a looting frame of mind. A big maple tree with at least 50 naked dolls hanging from it. They were all hanging from their necks on short pieces of rope like ornaments. They weren't the little barbie things, but six month or year old baby size, soft bodied plastic headed dolls. White ones, tan ones, asian ones, black ones... Creepiest thing i have seen in as long as i can remember and something i would definitely steer clear of.

Install about a dozen looter head/ pike/ Tiki torches (heads on pikes) to warn off the other low life scum! It worked for Vlad!

One experienced gentleman indicated that it is not advisable t meet the enemy at your BOL, rather meet him in the field ,then you have a means of escape and repositioning even booby trapping the spot they might choose to continue in there in offense .
I have long recommended having a trap of a sort using microphones planted in a likely area wired to your BOL .
In the event of an intrusion the listener would provide heads up as to the approach and approximately how many and what their strategy might be .
Every possible entrance would be rigged and then you can position your teams appropriately, before they even get close.
If any one of them are with in sniper range your done .
Assume the enemy to be smarter then your self and better armed and trained .

If I or my family were hungry, then I'm sorry but your backyard bbq would be fair game. I'm not going to give you the chance to just shot me.

I'm going to sit back and watch you for about three to four days. I'm going to see what your walking around with and when your walking around with it. I'm going to watch who in your group sleeps when. I'm going to see who lacks the self discipline to properly protect your group. I’m going to get you at your weakest link and time. I have a pair of NVG’s and two silencers. Your going to be hit quietly, fast, and hard or maybe I’ll get you slow and harsh.

If you don’t have a very large group you will be eaten by the wolf. Five or six guys cannot adequately secure a location. I can say that 90% of the people on this forum are not trained for this. The few who are know exactly what I’m saying.

And what I’m saying is this, If someone wants what you got bad enough, they will get it.

Lets use kev as an example. Sorry kev but you’re the only one I know who has kids. Please don’t feel this is a treat, it’s just an example to get others to think.

Now Kev has one son that I know of, but for our discussion we will say he has two of mature age (meaning gun savvy age). Kevs wife may or may not be into the survival thing. She may or may not be a gun person. If she is that brings his total to 4 people who COULD pull security at some point. Now Kev knows there are things that have to be done in order to live. For example cooking, cleaning, maintaining equipment, fetching water, etc, etc. Kev also knows hunting, gathering, preparing food and water, security cannot be done by just one person. So he divides his group up. Kev hunts and gathers. Kevs wife cooks and maintains the home. That leaves two sons to help with additional tasks. Kev also knows they must all pull security. He cant have two people on for 12 hours. The math just won’t add up there. Two per 8 hour shifts? Nope someone’s going to end up stand for 24 straight. Basically the best he could hope for was one guard for every 8 hours at night.

So now its 2 am and son #1 is standing outside walking parameter. I’ll play the bad guy here. I’ve been watching for four days. Every day I smell the good food cooking. Now I’ve got an idea for what’s going on at Kevs house. This is the best chance I’ve got. Kevs loved one ... he’s outside … and he’s alone. I take aim and I shot him, not to kill him, I want him to yell and cry. I want him to bring out mom and dad. I shot him in the upper thigh or lower pelvis. Now he cant hobble away. He can only yell. “ouchie … Mommy! Daddy! … help me!! “. Mommy’s action becomes knee jerk. She runs out the door. Her baby is hurt, “OMG I’ve got to get him”. Kev tries to catch her, something doesn’t feel right to him, but he is to slow or to far away. She gets out the door. When she reaches her hurt child … BLAM !!! Another hip shot. Now we’ve got two “yellers” out there. Now Kev adrenaline is pumping full speed, but what does he do? He looks out the window but sees no shooter, I’m 600m away and well hid. He’s trying to think but it’s so hard over the screams of his beloved family. Life slipping away with each drip of blood each pulse of the heart.

At this point I ( the shooter) have packed up. I’m going to back off till later tonight. I’ll watch with a high power scope to see what happens. You see, one of two things will happen at this point. Kev will either have to care for his loved ones on his own or he has to send out his other son to get help. If he sends out his son. I take him that only leaves Kev and he has to sleep at some point. If he stays buged in I know by the next day stomachs will be hungry and eyelids will be heavy. That makes for easy targets. One has to stay inside to take care of hurt brother and mommy. If they stay bugged in they will fall sooner then later. They can’t survive with just two.

Again I don’t mean to pick on Kev, but I’d like people to understand that sitting behind a computer saying “I’ll do this … or … I’ll do that” just wont work. You will have to have a large group to survive or you will die. You may be able to fend off the local bangers but at some point, someone more trained more dedicated then you will come and they will take you and yours.
So many good points as kev pointed out and tactically VERY sound.

My slight dissent is probably really more of a question as to your base premise:
Wouldn't most with that level of discipline, skill, knowledge and training already have put those skills and effort into their own well fortified camp/structure and defenses? I mean someone with that level of discipline would seemingly have thought out and acted on a plan of preparation.

Again, you raised excellent points and I am not saying all who have such skill sets wouldn't do what you suggested but just seems to me that it would be the exception than the rule. Of course, until we are in a SHTF situation, we can only speculate as to scenarios.

Many good thought provoking posts on this thread

The fact of the matter is there is a lot of people trained to be aggressors and these are going to train others with them, with lots of opportunity to practice.
To survive this kind of environment one's group must be aggressive and then some.
I didn't want to put it this way but like a spider and web.
The BOL area is a trap, what ever wanders in is fair game assumed to be raider.
Met ,not at the house, but at the perimeter on your terms not theirs .
It will take heightened security, disciplined communications ,and a well tuned silent alarm system at the perimeter.
The goal is to ambush them , not even giving them chance to form an attack plan.

I agree wholeheartedly. The discipline for such a "take down" is the discipline to prep in the first place.

Our darkest fears are not impossible, but in a very narrow band of need, capability, and opportunity.

Down here, during times of States of Emergency, looters get shot on sight, no questions asked.

Has any one ever thought about ways to make your home look condemned or like it may not have anything of value so they will not be inclined to check your house and maybe move on to another one?

Looters are going to be checking every thing looking abandoned.
One person from south america I think, observed that well lit homes in the middle of no where were of least interest and most likely well defended.
One prospective is to make it look like a very obvious trap ,actually inviting the unwary prey.
But still , waiting for them to get there ,your a sitting duck, literally.
