Awesome. I miss the days of MOPP gear, quarterly exercises in USAFE (EUCOM), etc. Well, no I don't!

I got a question: I have an unused, sealed filter that "expires" this year in 2020. I plan on buying more filters, but how long should I keep the filter around? It's a 3M/Scott Tactical "P100" 40mm filter:

Still in it's original packaging and all.

Can you explain how the average person with the typical equipment available to them can protect themselves from the Corona virus? Typical equipment would be a limited supply of common dust masks, latex gloves and maybe a few Tyvek suits.

According to MSA after they expire on the date, and the carbon layers will have started to denigrate. P100s on Amazon are all expired before you buy them.

Go Lowes/Home Depot for 3M 1/2 face respirator w/P100 filters. They have a could models in various department. $30-50ea depending on what filter.

Non vented safety goggles. Info is that has attacked thru eyes.

suits/gloves. Decon supplies.

Best is stay home and out of contact.

I have a few of the P100s with extra filters, I use them at work.

I am retired from the FD where my last position was on a HazMat Decontamination unit. The federal gov't purchased a dozen of these specialized units and distributed them to departments surrounding DC. Units are set up for mass casualty decontamination. I was HAZMAT certified.

I think it is going to be very difficult for the average person to protect themselves. The OP obviously has a high level of training and experience so I'd like to ask him how the average person can protect themselves.

You can put a mask on (and hopefully cover your nose with it too, unlike how I've seen some wearing them on TV), but your eyes are still exposed. You can wear goggles to protect your eyes but your clothes are still exposed and can carry the aerosolized virus on them. You could wear a Tyvek suit to protect your body but how many does the average person have on hand? And then when you get home or to a clean area you will need to remove, disinfect, clean or dispose of all the contaminated items without coming into contact with the virus.

Danish Gas Mask converted (via adapter) from 60mm to 40mm modern CRBN filters - ok to use or trash can it?

The mask still seals.

pretty sure the particulate (p100) portion will still work as it is only mesh fabric... the other portion is the vapor filtration, charcoal filtration... that breaks down with time. Hence the expiry date.

How does one clean / decontaminate NBC gear? (Links to more current military manuals on such topics would be appreciated.) and semi related are masks for painting and that sort of thing even cleanable? (the rubber ones with changeable filters) or are they just as disposable as the paper ones?
What replaced MOPP gear?
Where are legit places to buy NBC gear that is new?
Are masks for painting / working with similar chemicals even useful against viruses?
