How many rounds of SD and target ammo do you try to have stocked up?

Just started my stocking, so far got a little more than a couple thousand hollow points for SD ammo for my 9mm. Should i am for more? If tshtf..

How much do you have stocked?

also..might be a newb question but does ammo go bad? Do i have to use it up within a certain amount of years? or can i just put it in a box and forget about it until i need it some day?

Thanks.

How much do you shoot to stay proficient? how much do you think you will need to hunt with? Do you think you will be using said ammo to defend yourself/family from looters, or government agents?

It depends on what YOU think you will need if supply becomes non existent.
Ask yourself what you think will be needed for what you see it used for. You have to decide for yourself what your, and family's need might be and stock from there.

What any one of us here might stock has nothing to do with what others stock. It is an individual item and all we can do is stock what we each think is enough.

For myself and family, enough is a magical number that may never be reached. Do I have enough now? Who knows. Am I happy with what I have stocked? Almost but there is still room under the left side of the bed in the guest room.

When you ask how much you should store indicates that you do not know how much you shoot. How much food have you stashed? If you have a years supply of food then you should have a year supply of ammo. You first need to figure out how much you shoot and how much you want to shoot. then you can figure out how much you need. The standard answer from the people on this site will be that you can never have enough.

This is the constant quandary expressed on these boards. But allow me to give you something constructive to push against.

A couple thousand rounds is more than adequate for your 9mm pistol IMO. While more could be desirable, you need to expand your defensive battery first. Move on to the next greatest need, whether that be defensive rifle, shotgun, whatever. Move on to hunting implements if that is part of yoyr survival plan. Stock ammo for each before returning to the 9mm.

I live in Commiefornia as of two weeks ago, so... none. I'm not one of those crazy mass shooter types. I had about 1.5k 9mm, 2k mixed .223/5.56, 300 .308, and around 3k .22LR back when I lived in Colorado, but it all got lost when I was moving. Wish I knew where it went, officer. Most of it was FMJ because it was much, much cheaper than buying hollowpoint ammo.

I agree with this completely. The short answer is Non-Ya business. The Long answer is it is impossible to answer this question for what someone else needs anyways as personal shooting habits (how much training/hunting/range/competition shooting etc) factor greatly into the mix as to what someone might need. The final answer is what I own besides the fact of it being nobody else's business, should never be used by someone else to determine how much they should acquire. I find these threads similar to the "how much food storage do you have?". I don't mind someone asking for advice or opinions but I don't like ANYONE asking how much I have or store or have in prep for anything in person, much less anonymously on the internet. (Sorry OP, provide some details for what are trying to accomplish and your situation and I would be happy to provide suggestions and opinions based on that information).

If tshtf and lets say it takes you an average of ten shots to kill one person. A couple thousand rounds is enough to kill 200 (presumably armed) people before one of them could finally get to you and your little pistol. Seems to me that is a bit unrealistic..

Of course, maybe you are a great pistol shot. Maybe it would only take you five shots to kill a person. In which case, with 2,000 rounds, you could kill 400 bad guys before they got you. Hmmm.. I guess I'm not really feeling it.

Well on centerfire rifles I have several thousand for my main tacticool rifle and about a thousand each of a couple of hunting calibres.

On pistols I have over a thousand rounds in my main tacticool auto calibre and a couple hundred each of a couple other calibres I have in less tacticool pistols like revolvers.

I have several hundred rounds of shotgun shells for each gauge I own

I have several thousand .22LRs.

It and my guns all went deep six off my boat when the boat tipped. Oh well the government, and the 500 lb cops will take care of me and keep me safe.
