Study: Gun deaths, injuries in California spike following Nevada gun shows

Study by UC Berkeley published online today in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Anyone wish to wager the objectiveness of this study?

Quote:
When gun shows are held in Nevada, gun-related deaths and injuries spike across the state line in California for at least the next two weeks. A new study by UC Berkeley researchers examined gun deaths and injuries in California before and after gun shows in California and Nevada, and their results show a nearly 70 percent increase in deaths and injuries from firearms in California communities within convenient driving distance of Nevada gun shows. No spike in gun deaths or injuries was found following gun shows in California.

Studies also show people believe more BS stories after they’ve been posted on the Internet.

You don't wanna argue with them either

They'll get hysterical, fly into a fit of rage and climb into their safe space

I guess their information didn't include the gunman that killed 58 a couple of weeks before the gun show

I love to argue with them. They nearly stroke out and I get a good laugh.

Those shootings were in Las Vegas.

''Nevada has some of the least restrictive firearm laws in the country and no explicit regulations on gun shows.'' Background checks are required at gunshows here, you cannot come here from California and buy a firearm at a gun show....ammunition is a different story.

I've come to find that its necessary to examine the original source material for all stories published in popular media, regardless of their political leanings.

Good science is good science, irrespective of politics.

Below is a link to the original study. Lets see if it holds up to scrutiny. If it does, then its an interesting finding. If not, then it can be dismissed.

How about we all take a look and to see if there is a fault with the science before dismissal.

Research has shown that firearms from gun shows are disproportionately implicated in crimes
If guns can kill people they surely can be implicated in crimes. I'd really like to see that peer reviewed research.

People who live in homes with bathtubs are more likely to drown at home.

Let's do a study on CA gun crimes involving illegal aliens and gang members.

The first problem I notice in the original paper is in its design; its a quasi experiment.

This is problematic because it allows for conclusions that do not utilize randomness into the data, allowing for cofounding, which can create a false conclusion.

I'm gonna read more but I feel that the study is already on shaky grounds.

Thanks. So they are using this flawed study to support their assertions:

Braga AA Kennedy DM Gun control in America: gun shows and the illegal diversion of firearms. Georgetown Public Policy

Debunked here:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2936974/

The other "research" is not research at all but information gathered from the ATF files about arms diverted. There is nothing about increased violence related to gun shows in there at all.

Quote:
Firearms are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and accounted for more than 36 000 deaths and nearly 85 000 injuries in 2015 (1).
Those are the 2005 numbers, the 2015 numbers are about 10% lower.

Who proofed this? sixth graders?

Quote:
Greater availability and ownership of firearms also contributes to the higher rate of firearm deaths and injuries (hereafter called “firearm injuries”) in the United States than in other high-income countries (9–12).
Their references are 7-35 years old for this tidbit.

I have seen enough.

That is just the first paragraph.

I'd love to see some data about the guns used in the violence they counted, and the criminals that did the violence. Did the guns involved actually come from Nevada? Were the guns used by Californians or Nevadans, or some "other" group?

Realistically, this "study" is about as well put together as the classic "Increases in Ice Cream Sales Cause Increased Homicide Rates"....but the guy that did that one knew it was a joke.
