How to backup Android data to PC instead of cloud storage? I checked a few apps but root access is required.

All my Android devices show up as storage on my home network, so I back them up the same way I'd back up any storage device. You should be able to plug your device into a PC and then just drag what you want to back up onto the PC.

You will likely get a good solution if you specify the devices and operating systems.

Cloud back up can be good along with the PC.

Good back up is 3 copies, on at least 2 media one of which is off site.

Charliemeyer007 brings up a good point about redundancy when it comes to back ups. Personally I have 4. For pictures I use Amazon and Google. I then back them up onto my computer and onto a external HD.

Generally this is only done for important events, such as birthdays and weddings. For other more mundane pictures I dont worry so much about it. This is because, depending on the quality of the pictures they can take up alot of space.

Have you ever try to simply copy-paste the files into your PC..?

Not all files are visible in Windows Explorer such as contacts, text messages. Copy-paste is good for photos, music and videos.

Data that needs to be backed up must be exported from Android to computer, then do the backup. As root, when i backed up the data before, root access was not required.

Try Easy Backup. I've used it with android on several phones, as recently as a month ago. It allows you to backup to the cloud or SD card, contact info, text messages, pictures, whatever. From the SD card you can copy to another computer.

For stuff as simple as messages and contacts, "settings"->"import/export" always does the job for me. Google owns Android, so backing up stuff to your Google account is simple. For local backup, I usually connect to my laptop using Bluetooth and then dump everything to both external HDs on my home network.
After that, you can pick the tool of your choice. I bought a 128gig thumb drive at Walmart yesterday for $9, but I usually do monthly backups to old 4.7gig DVD blanks. I bought 500 of them from Ebay for $10, so I have to do something with them. Can't see how both NAS drives would futz out at the same time, but a lightening strike might do the job.
There's software available that makes the job easier.

When I had android, SMS Backup+ was the program I used to backup my messages. It would save them to my gmail account every few minutes automatically. I could then read and search them along my emails which is extremely handy compared to scrolling thru messages in phone.

Contacts can be synced to the same gmail/google account, since one is needed to activate phone anyways.

Both can be exported for a local copy.
