Default 5 reasons to learn hand to hand combat if your armed.

Often when I teach Law enforcement or armed privet security companies I hear the same question, " why do I have to learn this stuff, I have a gun? " To that question there are many answers, I've decided to summarize it into 5 simple reasons, which I'm sure that if you take your time and read them you'll become convinced that practicing in unarmed combat is an essential and crucial part of your fighting gear.

1- " to close to shoot " :
Any average police man or Law enforcement personnel deals with people from up close on a daily basis, It's part of the job. If that person decides to attack with his bare hands, or with a concealed knife it would be from a very close distance. There is no way that a person could go for his weapon from such a close range without having to divert the attack first, for that a person will need some knowledge in basic hand to hand blocking and movement.

2- " Your gun is jammed " :
The street is a very tough kind of battlefield, it is close combat. In a war zone, if you have a jam in your weapon you may have time to jump behind a bolder and fix the jam or change the magazine. If your in a small room and you encounter a terrorist, it is probably no more then a few short feet away. In that range you won't have time to do anything but charge at your opponent with pure aggression, knowing how to use your body as a weapon will help you a lot.

3- " Preventing unnecessary violence " :
No normal person enjoys hurting a different person if he could pervent it, especially professional law enforcement personnel. In many cases, because the person is not trained enough, a rather simple situation of control and restrain terns into a violent mess, all bescause of lack of knowledge in unarmed techniques.

4- " Your gun is not with you " :
Violence is everyware. You could be off work on a beautiful vacation with your family, or going to the movies with you girlfriend and Boom !! you're hurled into a world of violence, reality changes in a second. Knowing basic knowledge in unarmed combat could help you protect yourself and your loved ones.

5- " Be the complete warrior " :
A good warrior knows how to fight in any situation, and under any condition. A complete warrior should be well trained with a gun, or without. Train hard and tern your body into a weapon.

Take care,
Sharir.

That's why people should learn Krav. It's quick and efficient, just like any good trusty side arm.

Unless I'm at work I am never without my firearm. With that said, I agree 100% that unarmed self defense is an area that only a fool would dismiss. But IMO if I have to pay an instructor to teach me skills that I could not learn on my own, than those skills are too complex. My training partner and I have studied WWII close combat in the past and are currently studying CFA, utilizing DVDs and books. Simple, brutal, no BS stuff.

We're supposed to be survivalists, as such, it would be imprudent and foolish of us not to learn self defense. I agree wholeheartedly with the OP.

There are quite a few of us on here who are involved with Krav Maga. I agree with your five principals, and as far a weapon disarming or defending I believe Krav to be second to none.

Very good post. Its nice to have someone of your SME on the boards. Welcome.

Would you advise us on what type of self defense is the simplest to learn and practice, that is still effective on the street?

Ive heard very good things about Israeli Krav Maga.

I practice Krav Maga now for a few years, and think it is very effective. But I also think everyone should try several fighting technics, and choose the one he feels best.

Any system can teach you basic skills. What you need to develop is the proper mindset. If you have a competition mindset where you believe you can win a fight, you will die. It is not about winning but surviving.

While I agree learning something like Krav Maga or Systema (Russian special forces) is an excellent compliment to carrying, it shouldn't be mandatory. The best thing about carrying as a civilian is you have the surprise. Something police and security aren't lucky to have. You could choose to not engage a terrorist, or a criminal robbing a bank, and its completely within your right. If not engaging an active shooter means you won't be harmed, that's the better route. Do what protects your life/family first, then help others.
