I think they forgot to count the people here. They buy more than that from PSA based on most threads.

There was a report on the news this morning about guns and if I heard the number correctly they said 25 million NICS checks have been performed so far this year. Someone is bulking up..

Not sure how the ATF has a record of sales. When a 4473 form is filled out, the FFL holder keeps the form, they are not sent to ATF. The State gets the record of the sale. At least that is the way it was when I had my FFL.

Welp, I bought a new one last week, in fact I picked it up on black Friday at my local FFL after ordering it online the week prior and having it shipped to them. My local FFL said that it would be one of the busiest days of the year for ATF background checks. Mine went right through almost immediately and out I walked with it...

ATF tracks backgkround checks and manufacturer production reports. That obviously doesn't count "built" firearms and imports off the books. No doubt the actual numbers are significantly higher.

I also think those are probably based on the number of background checks they run. I imagine it would also be the number apporved, the small % that are rejected are probably not included. That is problematic for a few reasons. I've NEVER had to have a background check run as I've had my CWP since the time all that B.S. started & I've bought at least a couple of guns in my lifetime, sadly almost all were lost in tragic boating accidents, but I digress. Also not every person who passes a background check ends up buying a gun, not to mention you can buy multiple guns on one background check, at least in most states. Then there is also the 80% builds that a lot of people are doing then there are also people who make their own guns in their shops, most being anywhere from somewhat crude to very crude. If you ever watch any of the The Idahoan Show on YouTube, he makes some crude home made firearms, which even though they are crude is still fun to watch, for me at least. I think you can get a good ballpark idea of how many new factory made firearms are sold each year, but beyond that it's all guesstimation as to how many new firearms are sold to & made by citizens every year.

They count NICS checks as one estimate, and they know how many the manufacturers ship each year.

These aren’t sales numbers. They are manufacturing numbers. So these ONLY count US made firearms and ammo not imports. Also home made firearms are not counted.

Some of these firearms and ammo went to the government and some remain unsold.

Itís manufactured guns sold to distributors and dealers. They canít really do NICS check counts accurately, since I can buy 5 guns on one NICS check.

In Utah, we do a modified NICS check with a CCW. Iím not sure who the call goes to, but we donít get charged the $7 the usual NICS costs.
