I'd rather pull out my $1 pocket knife from Walmart that's legal & shiny to scare them. I really don't want to cut anyone and would rather use it for a deterrent to end the confrontation or give me a chance to run.

I buy a bunch of these $1 knives b/c I always want to have at least a blade on me for protection.....and in case I need to trash it or stash it outside before going into some place where it's not allowed (club, bar, federal building, etc.).

Maybe some loser that got rejected at a bar may try the grab your arm first or w/e dance/rape techniques that we see in these counter-rape videos....but someone who's a serial killer or serial rapist is going to have his night of kidnapping & raping all planned out ahead of time....and should be bringing tasers, duct tape, brass knuckles, tear gas, etc....and wearing a steel cup to protect his nuts.

"Getting your weapon taken away and used on you" is something that the anti-gun crowd preaches in order to try and scare people in regards to owning guns for protection. You're always better off with a weapon.
Carying a machine gun will not stop you getting sucker punched. Situational awareness for the win there.

Yea no kidding, but read what I said....how it wouldn't help nor hurt. She was against having a knife at all.

yeah some people are like that. Is it worthwhile relying on a tactic (weapon) that you are not willing to use?

I'm trying to reason with her.

I'm not even 100% certain that I'd use a knife myself, yet I still carry and train with them.

Even with a gun.... and I have shot at someone before, just once. Not even sure I'd do it again but I still have guns.

But showing a knife or gun (while backing away) is a big deterrent and can end the problem. Backing away shows the other guy that I'm not challenging his manliness........but I will F him up if I had to.

Only the bits that are not about porn..

Otherwise if you can convince her to use a weapon then fine. If not you need to find another way to solve the problem.

I was watching a NutNFancy video earlier reviewing the Kel-Tec .223 carbine....he said something that made a lot of sense in regards to carrying a gun...."it gives you options".

Besides a gun, a knife and/or pepper spray is her best bet. Some states might not even allow spray. Fighting w/o weapons against men is almost out of the question unless she's really badass. It's a rude awakening when they find out that their kick to the nuts or jab to the eye doesn't stop their attacker like their Self Defense Instructor (who never fought before) told them they would.

So in short several of us who have posted believe that womens self-defence should consist of:

Active situational awareness.

The correct mindset.

Training in a full contact combative system.

Carrying a knife or a pistol to overcome the potential size/weight/strength disadvantage.

(Sucks for women who live in countries where it's all but impossible to carry a pistol for self-defence...but that's the price of living in a 'safe' country. )

I agree. I like the idea of a weapon as giving you options. I think it is more about working like you don't have one and then being glad if you do. If that makes sense.

Access the risk and take action to remove the danger from you or indeed youreself from the danger. It's not about fighting it's about surviving. Escape, fight like an animal in order to do so, don't go to the floor for free. Forget MA skills just rip and claw, bite and tear at him. Kick like your life depends on it. Focus on creating a window of opportunity in order to flee. Then run for your life. Keep it real simple, hurt him and go like the wind !

I was attacked one time. I carry a knife but couldn't get to it. I was punched in the head for 5 minutes. He wanted my phone. I've never been so scared in my life. It was the first time I called the cops for anything. I still look over my shoulder and out my home windows to see if someone is there. The guy got my keys. I'm even scared at work.

Best damn advice I've read in this whole testosterone-filled, "my way is better than your way" thread!
