Default 6.5, 6.8 or something else?

Advertise Here

So now that I have a couple of options in 5.56 I'm looking to branch out. Ideally, I'd like an upper than I can use the same mags and lower as one of my 5.56 rifles but with more punch and better 200-400 yard performance.

Now I believe both qould require dedicated mags but whats the current thoughts on 6.5 grendel vs 6.8 spc2? Is there a better option? I'm looking to optimize game taking ability as well as STHF self defense, of course

It's all personal preference.
There are numerous cartridges that fit the platform and give nearly identical performance.

Personal preference, but I like a 300 BO with supersonics for deer here. Only have to swap the upper, as everything else stay the same. My limit would be 200 yds but that is fine as it's pretty dense woods around me. If I were aiming for 200+ yds I'd go 6.5 Grendel.

look at .277 wolverine, same bolts and magazines as 5.56, can be made from 5.56 brass, and has 95% of the capabilities of 6.8SPC.. all you need is a barrel

Yes

Stripped lowers are cheap. Buy three and build a lower for all of the above.

In what terms better 200-400 yard performance? Accuracy? Terminal velocity? Retained energy?

Now if I never plan on running a SBR/pistol or suppressed, does that change any thoughts or opinions?

6.5 Grendel meets my hunting and long range defense needs. There are 2 brands of russian ammo available fairly cheap for stockpiling.

.224 Valkyrie
It for have an 18 or 20 inch barrel it is still good to 1000 yards. With a 22 or 24 inch barrel it is good to 1200 yards. NOT WITH ME but my friend is a good enough shot. I know my limits

When I needed more punch than a 5.56 and longer range than a 300 BO...I went 6.5 Grendel. It just seemed to be such a logical choice to make when you look at Bullet Mass vs velocity vs trajectory and whats available on the market out there.

You and everyone else.

The easiest and best solution, IMHO, is the 6.5 Grendel. You will need a new magazine and bolt. Everything else will be compatible with your current lower. It is a great round. Plenty of deer size game knockdown power. Very accurate out to your distance requirements.

The current choice of 6.5 Grendel and supply of factory ammo is better and less costly than the 6.8. (I do not own a 6.8 so my experience is limited to shooting it only at the range.)

The 224 Valkyrie is a finicky round. I have have either GREAT success or TERRIBLE luck with factory ammo with this round. It will require a new magazine and bolt. The hit or miss issues Iíve experienced with the accuracy are due to bullet weights, velocities and 1:7 twist rates. I havenít found the right hand load mix for 90gr loads yet.

Both the 6.5 Grendel and .224 Valkyrie will stay super sonic past 1000 yards. The 224 is better suited for varmint hunting and the 6.5 is better suited for medium sized game hunting. The 224 Valkyrie is best suited for 22Ē to 24Ē barrels. Neither would be my first choice for 800+ yards shooting. If I had to choose between the two it would be the 6.5 Grendel.

The 300 BO, with 16Ē barrel and super sonic loads, would also meet you requirements. It would not require a bolt/mag change. It would be at itís effective hunting limits at 400 yards.

I also like 300BO, but it will eventually be a host for a suppressor and with a shorter barrel, more focused inside 200 meters. If I wanted to get more performance than 5.56 between 200-400, I would go Grendel without a second thought. It would still be a niche option as I would keep 5.56mm for 90% of self-defense and general-purpose use including training, but for actual hunting, the Grendel (or 300BO at closer ranges) would be ideal...and for that use, you don't need thousands of rounds on hand.

During the last shortage, the local shops were able to get 6.8 ammo unlike 6.5, .223 or .308.
Just something to consider.

Seeing is believing. 6.8SPC on large hogs at 200 yards.

Default 6.5, 6.8 or something else?

So the more I read it looks like .300blk will do everything I need and then some. Even can hit some range if you can handle the drop, with supers... only thing Iím unsure of is swapping the upper vs just the barrel. I have a mid length gas system now and it looks like virtually all use a pistol length. Thoughts?

I kinda want to use my new Leupold 3-9x40, though... so itís either that on my 4x RDS optic...

Swapping the upper is easier. Carbine or mid is fine on a 16"

The price of AR parts are so cheap right now youíd be better off just buying a complete upper.
If cash is a huge issue you can use the bolt and charging handle from your current 5.56/.223 upper.

I wouldnít be tearing down a good upper to swap barrels, you be saving less than $100.

I think Bear Creek just had a .300 upper on sale, or check Palmetto.

When I got tired of 5.56 I did a lot of studying. Settled on 6.5grendel.
