Default Cane for self defense

If you have to have one, might as well be able to use it in a pinch.

Any recommendations on types, species of wood, brand, etc?

Tractor supply sells a stout hook cane for sorting animals.

Cut to length and add a rubber tip. good to go.

I prefer a staff, my favorite is about 5'6" and just over an inch around. Made from a fairly straight piece of iron wood, pretty heavy.

As mentioned a stockman’s cane is a good starting place! A rubber tip and a little TLC with some sandpaper and boiled linseed oil makes a good sturdy cane that you can take anywhere. I generally flame harden mine too, but that’s a personal preference.

All that being said I carry a nose high hardwood staff more times than not! My preference is a sapling with a root knob well dried and cut the right length!

You mentioned "if you have to have one"

I had an accident and operations, went from a wheelchair to crutches to cane.
At the time,it wouldn't have made a difference what type of cane I had.If I had to use it in a defensive/offensive situation,a gust of wind would have knocked me over.
Everyone is different,and I'm sure there is training,but I eventually healed,and don't need one.

For wood types I like hickory!

Many others are quite usable, but for strength vs. weight hickory is pretty close to ideal!

I think that “Self Defense” canes sold as such can possibly be problematic whereas a stockman’s cane can easily be slightly modified to do what’s needed, but are still just a sturdy stockman’s/ADA type cane instead of a “weapon”!

Steaming and opening the crook a bit makes it more useful for SD as does putting a beak or point on the end of the crook!

Boiled linseed oil with about 20-25% turpentine makes an ideal treatment for all wooden canes, but specially SD canes since upkeep is quick and easy!

Canes with obvious weapon features defeat the concept; a stealthy defensive tool that can be with you in situations where weapons are forbidden, and that have a legitimate purpose which cannot be reasonably construed as premeditated violence.

Premeditated violence is the whole point.
Besides the Americans with Disabilities Act gives you the right so unless its got a blade or shoots a round your good. Anyone hassles you risks getting a lawsuit.

I have the Tractor Supply stockman (great too) and the other is a homemade whoop stick posing as a gentleman's walking stick. The next one will likely be made from 1.25" oak.

I can say I've handled the Cold Steel stuff and they are great.

I hate flying/traveling unarmed when forced to do so on business or visiting relatives in California.
So I have a heavy Hickory cane with a plain curved "gentleman's" handle,
and an "unbreakable" telescoping umbrella, that I take on my business/family trips. Either one would probably get me out of trouble. Neither was inexpensive. Most would never justify the cost. Both go right through TSA. Much better than nothing.
In the next couple years, or less, no more air travel. I will only go to states in my truck that are firearm friendly. No more TSA. I just want to be left alone.

I bought this just to travel with. It's very nice and the price was right.

I bought a piece of Titanium rod off Amazon, and am thinking about how
to make it into a cane. Its a long range project.

This rod has the right amount of strength, versus, weight, and is just
narrow enough to put inside of bamboo, or I could figure out how to
hollow out some wood, because I want it to blend in where I would carry it.

Any ideas would be appreciated, but don't expect me to finish it soon.

Its hard to drill through this Titanium alloy, so I am thinking of it being the
center of a cane that appears to be wood. The only reason I consider Bamboo
is I have plenty of it, and it hollows out easily. I am thinking of anchoring it
inside with a set screw or two, but I bet someone has a better idea.

This is what I bought:
Grade 23 Titanium Round Rod, Unpolished (Mill) Finish, Annealed, ASTM
F136, 0.75" Diameter, 36" Length
Sold by: Amazon.com Services, Inc

One thing I have noticed about myself as I get older, is that although I can't
run as well, or as far as I used to, I have gotten a little stronger over the years,
so my goal with this cane will be to utilize my strength to deliver one
devastating blow, and because of the extra weight, and strength, end the fight
right there, and run away.

I would not waste time on that. A curved handle would make it not a weapon. Some states, California, et al, would consider that a dangerous weapon. No since in being a criminal. Putting it in bamboo or wood would not change it and would be science project. Make it an orthopedic device with a rubber tip.

I don't plan on being around after I use it. It will have a handle, I just haven't decided if it will be a piece of aluminum stock I have, or solid wood.

I don't plan on wasting my time with a regular cane.

Sure you take risks by carrying a heavy cane, but until you use it, they can't
take it away from you legally unless you go somewhere I don't plan on going.
After I us it for self defense, it will be obvious that I had to use it because I
don't have anger issues.

Even if worse comes to worse, and I end up cracking a skull with it, the chances of me being linked to it are slim. I never go to bars at night or other seedy places with lots of witnesses.

Is it a brittle alloy?
Will it bend?
Would make the perfect orthopedic device with a rubber foot and a decent handle
At around 2.5 pounds it would be very useful
