Default If God is Unchangeable, Why Pray?

Advertise Here

I cannot recall if this was discussed a year or so ago. However, I'd like to solidify my understanding. I gave an answer to someone I am witnessing to but not sure you would all agree.

What got me thinking about this again was in reading the OT, God said he was going to destroy the rebellious Israeli's wandering in the desert and start anew with a different nation. Moses changed God's mind.

So, the pivot point is how does praying change events? And if it does not change events, why pray? Alternatively, if God answers prayers by changing events, like with Moses, how is God unchangeable?

NOTE: Please answer in your own words. Do not fill up post after post with Scripture pasting. (Referencing verses is OK) Thanks.

God answers prayers. It's in His nature. So He doesn't change.

God has commanded us to pray that hasn't changed.

Oh God! Not circular answers!!

God's "answer" to prayers is sometimes no. That is a change from when he responds to what you want in your prayer as he did with Moses. Change ≠ Unchangeable.

Just let us all know how you WANT us to answer and I'll see what I can do.

I'd quote Scripture but I know that bugs you so I won't.

The only true unchanging thing about God is His love for His people.

He gave His people free will. So as people can change, God can change with them.

Its like this God is all knowing, he already knows our hearts and wishes, He wants us to ask for the things we desire, or in other words you have two apples and I want one, even though you don't mine me having one you would rather I ask for it than just take it. Its the right thing to do.

We were made for God's good pleasure. "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." Philippians 2:13 (See Isaiah 47:3 too).

Actually ... it was sorta the other way around (sorry to say). I owe a few amends if I ever see some of those kids.

Someday you'll have to explain why you don't like Scripture to be posted in your threads. This is the religious section and, if you're a Christian, your entire faith revolves around the Word of God. For Christ is the living Word.

Usually I pray because I need God to change ME... I think more than anything, that THAT is why God requires us to pray...

We may pray and intercede for someone, and God hears and moves. We CAN fight spiritual battles alongside God and things change.

Also, think of Jesus’ first miracle...it wasn’t time yet for Him to start His ministry, but His mom believed he could do whatever, and that He was the one the servants should ask what to do about them being out of wine. Jesus said He ONLY did what the Father told Him to do...so I think Mary’s faith and trust moved God to ok a miracle before the original time. (And/or God the Father knew that was time, and Jesus did not yet know.) This also happened with the Gentile woman who asked Jesus for a miracle...and He sparred with her about how God’s miracles weren’t for “the dogs”, and she countered with “even the dogs get crumbs”....moving Jesus’ ministry beyond just the Israelites and to the whole world.

Some people (You and Off-Grid) go too far. I see original thought. Biblical support is OK but not to replace original thought.

We can all read Scripture on our own and do not have to read paragraphs of it here. I do like Scripture and quote it often.

The way I see it, God changing His mind about something is not the same as Him "CHANGING". He is who He is, just like we are. If we pray for God to help in a certain situation, He will answer, one way or the other. God being God, He knows what is going on in EVERYTHING, so sometimes it may seem as if we dont even need to bring it up. But God loves our efforts to communicate. Paul said he Prays without Ceasing. We dont have to always be in our prayer closet to speak/converse with our Heavenly Father. The more you talk to God, the easier it gets to hear from Him. Though I have never orally heard God speak, He speaks to my spirit frequently. And these words go thru my chest, my heart, my spirit, not my head per say. But I have no doubt as to where they come from. John 10:27 My sheep know my voice ...
And many times, I dont know an answer to my question. This, to me, doesnt mean He didnt hear me or is ignoring me, I just take it in stride. My favorite scripture is Romans 8:28, and I live by that fact. If He wants me to move in a certain direction, or do a certain thing, He will let me know. Jonah got swallowed up by a big fish, Paul got interrupted on a country road, Daniel spent time in a den with unfriendly neighbors. God will show us what we need to do. We just have to be willing to go thru the door.
I have heard many preachers say "If God closes the door, look for a window". To me, in my life, I have decided, and experienced, that God is able to open any door, and shut any door. But He has ALWAYS led me to the opening, and I hope I have done/do my part if/when that happens. My battles have been with the devil trying to discourage/scare me away. I may not know or understand why at the time, but I can usually look back and see the answers.
Most of my life has been a contest. I am kind of a strange duck, and therefore many, many times folks will take me the wrong way, even thinking Im up to something. But after 60 years, I see that God uses this as a test against others, to judge whether their reactions are merciful or judgemental. While it has not been much fun for me as a whole, I sleep well at night knowing, while not sin free, I feel good about my life, my witness, and my future. Looking forward to shaking hands with Jesus, Paul, Peter, and many others who have gone ahead.
But,back to the OP, we should also be careful for what we ask God for. Sometimes you may be taking on a load you can be held accountable for, as God expects us to use what He has given us to further His Kingdom, to Glorify Him. To whom much is given, much is required!

God is God. He is all powerful and all knowing. By comparison, the best human beings are weak and ignorant. Divine providence trumps everything else. God is not subject to any scriptural writings or latter-day interpretations thereof. Nor is He ordered by prayer, fasting, almsgiving or any other ascetic practice. Those things are simply tried and true methods that were used by the saints in their efforts to draw nearer to God. Your mileage may vary. THESE things are all unchangeable.

If we know our proper place before God, our prayers will include an humble acknowledgement of our fallen state [ie, that of a sinner who truly wishes to repent], a plea for His mercy, and that His will be done. Everything else is superficial.
  • He answers every prayer.
  • His mercy is limitless.
  • His will is always done.

Kyrie Eleison

Our "original thoughts" can lead us down dark paths. We need Scripture to keep us on the "straight and narrow." Broad is the path that leads to destruction. My very best "original thoughts" had me drinking booze and doing drugs for years. It's when I realized how screwed up mankind's ideas were and are that I turned to Christ.

Man's "original thoughts" are turning America into a Socialist toilet.

Awesome verse!! But watch out ... you'll be accused of discussing the "figurative" portions of Scripture. That's a no-no in certain threads. But thanks for the verse, nonetheless.
