Default Minimum pistol caliber YOU personally rely on

Advertise Here

A different thread has me curious.

Scenario. You are in your daily routine which involves work, kids soccer practice, grocery shopping, retail store shopping, driving, mass transit, etc. Suddenly YOUR life is at stake and some violent person or people are coming at you with lethal weapon(s) intent to kill you right NOW. Your typical armed robbery or intent to murder situation where your severe injury, or death is certainly either possible or likely.

This is a lightning fast fluid situation. You need to act, or die. You have just seconds to reach down and draw your weapon and fire to save your life. This not a question about what is ultimately lethal at some point (yes, a thrown rock can be lethal). This is about what YOU want and are confident will end the threat immediately, not a day later due to their injuries.

For your primary, daily, carry gun, what is the smallest caliber you feel reliably confident in doing the job, right now, reliably and repeatedly. Second question, how many rounds is the minimum you want in that caliber in the cylinder/mag/chamber of the gun. We all want a howitzer in that situation, but realistically day-to-day, in essense, what is the absolute minimum you want to rely on to save your life.

Choices in the poll reflect caliber and capacity. I tried to bunch these into rough equivalents and class of performance, and rough classes for capacity/size, but forgive me if there's minor errors, and there are some guns/calibers that perhaps don't quite fit perfectly. This isn't science, just curiosity of views so let's not get lost in the weeds. Please pick the 1 caliber minimum, and the minimum capacity you demand.

I personally would not have any trouble carrying a .22 WMR. I am actually in the process of researching a good revolver to incorporate Into my edc with that caliber.

Shot placement is key. Granted in an adrenaline fueled situation you don't have time to aim for vitals. Basically center mass is always your best bet.

Ruger single nine with nine rounds in the cylinder.

For me, the normal daily minimum is going to be 9x19 with at least 7 rounds such as my Walther PPS. Or Kahr P9.

Ideally, it's a compact sized (roughly all the same size) such as G19/23, CZ75 compact/PO1, HK USP, Sig P229, Walther P99 or Bersa Thunder Pro. These offer somewhere in the 12-15 rounds of either .40 or 9mm for about a 2 pound pistol package with top tier ergos and controls, good barrel and grip lengths and site radius, and good supply of aftermarket accessories.

My choices have changed over the years. Starting in the mid 1980s I carried a 5 shot SP101 in 38 sp.

But society is getting worse in my opinion, so my self defense choices are getting bigger and more capable.
Plus my eyesight is starting to suck, so I need a highly visible front sight, and a rail for my light.

My everyday carry is now a Sig 229 in 40 cal.

9mm is as small as I go but I carry a .40 S&W.
10 rounds is my basement but the PX4 compact carries 12+1, and 1 extra mag

We are aligned in our views and SD choice/needs.

I find the Sig P229 and .40 a near perfect combination, and about as good as it possibly gets in the balance of firepower and design. I'd give it an A+. I'd give a few other guns A+, or an A, in my list above...

9mm (Speer Gold Dot LE Duty, 124gr JHP). ~1100fps for muzzle energy of ~330 ft-lbs.

Kahr CM9, DeSantis IWB (@ 4 o’clock), with one in chamber & 1 extra mag for 13 rounds total.

I’m satisfied with this setup.

curious why the 45acp gets listed with the 44 mag and 10mm when its no more powerful than a 9mm and 40S&W.. if we were going by bullet diameter the 9mm and .357 sig would be with the .380 and 9x18

Caliber would be 22. Now if you want to know what round, which is another question as there are several 22 caliber pistols, I would go with 22 lr. the lowly 22lr offers good control, ammo availability and a wide spectrum of use. It would not be best agains a well trained military unit or a mob of stoned rag heads but for most work it would do the job. Large caliber center fires may work best on two legged bad guys but I doubt that will be an issue where I live.

For me, 9mm in a mid-size G19 15+1 seems to be where I stabilized. I've thought about going down in capacity for some more convenience during carry, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I can conceal the G19 every day all day wearing normal clothes. The threat of multiple attackers and gang type violence seems to be going up, not down. I like capacity.

I don't really see any advantage to 40 or 45 over 9mm in effectiveness. Not enough to give up capacity.I don't want to carry a 10mm nor a 44mag. I don't really see anything on the market now that increases capacity options, even in 22LR for the same general frame size. Personally, I don't think that rim fire is reliable enough for life or death carry. I've had more mis-fires in 22LR than anything.

I would consider a smaller caliber, but I don't really see any common options below a 9mm/380/357 diameter that gives me more rounds in the same space. If I could wish something into existence, and make it easy/common to find ammo for, I would consider something like a 32 apc 'super' to get more capacity in the same frame size. That could let me keep about 15 rounds in a sub compact frame length which would be slightly easier to conceal, or let me gain capacity in the compact frame size to 18-20 rounds. Again, this is more a wishlist type idea.

Just out of ease of carry in town or on the farm, I carry my Ruger LCP 380 an awful lot.

I use defensive ammo in it and have no doubt that it’ll scratch that itch that’s bothering you.

I’ve taken out a wild dog with one shot at maybe 20’, it made the mistake of challenging me in my own barn over a chicken carcass. I’ve taken out raccoons and opossums as well, all in very quick dispatch.

From my use of this 380 I wouldn’t have a problem defending myself with it.

Personally, I like the .45 ACP. However, for daily carry, I admit to carrying lately a Shield EZ in .380 with Hornady American Gunner (90 XTP). Never had to shoot back at anybody and hope that never happens. It's summer and I have no fear the .380 won't do the job. Winter comes, that all could change of course

You raise a good point, and that's "weather/climate." Would you say you carry the .380 in hot weather for comfort and light dress but the .45 as your normal go-to carry gun for less extreme weather. Or some other interpretation?

For me, I have carried a .380 rarely but sometimes when it would be impractical to carry anything larger than a squirt gun .380 such as the Keltec P3AT. Like a pool-side party or on the beach in just swim trunks.

It seems for me these days it's all about the weight and concealability no matter the weather. When I leave the house it's with the Ruger LCP in my pocket. In the house these days it's the Shield .380 but many times outside like in my UTV, I prefer the Ruger because it is totally out of sight. I carried the Shield 9mm for a couple years but found it hard to conceal. If I was in a gunfight, I'd really want my SA XDM 5.25 in .45 ACP which is my most accurate pistol out to 30 yards so I carry that in winter on my property. I probably muddied the waters with that answer eh?

Seems two polls in one. Plus "minimum?" I have many guns. There are occasions when I carry my .22 revolver because of weight.

What is the purpose of the poll?

UUnless I'm lounging around the house wearing nothing but shorts and shoes (which I have to wear to have my orthodics) ...in which case I will sometimes have nothing in my pocket but a J frame.
(Keep in mind there's Glovks, AK's, Smiths, and shotguns stashed all over)

I will have a g27 in my pocket.
I even have one vacuum sealed so I can swim with the damn thing.
Before you call me paranoid:I was swimming about 5 miles from here, floating in the swimming hole with a watermelon I was about to cut up when up strolled a local unstable meth head with a fishing pole and a POS .22.
I didn't rush away, cut my watermelon, shared it with him, and commented on how I'd get out of the way of his fishing and rushed away!
...but you cannot rely on a method head to be stable, nor rathional.

Note: I switched to the 27 from the 26 when I moved out here.
Pigs, dogs, bear, cats... In a urban area 9mm (All Have Premium HP's) would be fine.

If I'm not swimming there's (2) G22 mags (15 rounds each) in my back pocket.

Occasionally I'll end up with the one Glock.

Mostly I have a J frame (speed strip added off side) or a 2nd glock.

That's my minimum.

I have derringers, I have mouse guns, I have (fill in the blank)

A long time ago I asked myself basically what's in the OP and decided the answer was a subcompact glock backed by full sized reloads.

Only "compromise" is I figure 9 rounds of .40 from a guy wearing nothing but a pair of shorts in the creek should make it to my truck.

I suppose the purpose of the OP is curiosity and to make people ask themselves if that mouse gun is there for more than to make them "feel safe".

Well, me being me, and doing my own interpretation of the OP, I made four selections, in two pairs.

The first is what I daily carry when I daily carry for safety. That is a high capacity, full size, double stack (either 13- or 14-round) magazine, .45 ACP semi-auto, with a minimum of two additional 13/14 round magazines (not counting any specialty rounds, such as shot shells or flares). I have carried four magazines, with four specialty round magazines in some higher risk situations.)

The second is what I carry as a back-up or last ditch weapon, or if I cannot carry the larger regular carry gun, but feel the need to have something. It is a 7-round .32 ACP semi-auto with two spare 7-round magazines.

I would only carry just the .32 ACP if the risks were low, and having the full size weapon simply not acceptable. I usually carry both when I carry.

Give the money, I would switch to a .50 GI, with 10-round magazines, or, one of the best choices in my mind for a standard round and not the semi-custom .50 GI, would be a Para-Ordnance P-18 .38 Super with 18-round magazines.

(The OP left out the .38 Super, by the way, which I consider second best to only the .45 ACP, and much better than the 9mmP and .40, without the problems the 10mm has with gun stress and recoil.)

Just my opinion.
