May have been covered before, but new and still trying to find my way around.

Question: What .223 ammo shoots best in a very old set of mini-14's. One is a ranch, the other a 185 series. So trying to find ammo in stock everywhere, and found a dizzying collection, bullet types I never heard of.

Even a 55g boat tail !!! Also the standard plain old 55g FMJ. Heard that the 62g boat tail has tumbling problems, what ammo has the serious knock down performance, etc.

Seems to be much conflicting info out there.

HELP !!!!

You are late to the party
PSA has 55 grain FMJ
For around $400 per 1k delivered
Best deal I know of
The 55 grain does a good job on the "target"
Even 1/9 will stabalize 62 grains so I don't buy the tumbling
I am selling all my 62 grain FMJ due to poor terminal performance and barrel wear
You want the best
Black Hills 50 grain Optimized is the best
Hope you find what you are looking for

How did you gauge the terminal performance and barrel wear. The "Readers Digest" version of your reply is ok :-)

Thank you for your prior answer so promptly.

Anything you find that will shoot 3MOA out of a mini-14 or better you better scoop up.

1x9 or better for 62 and heavier. Shot a LOT of 69s out of my Colt NMAR when it still had a 1x9 barrel on it.

For good ol' fashioned plinking, can't beat 55 FMJs. They worked on Viet Cong. They work on ground hogs. They make a fantastic mess of pumpkins and milk jugs filled with water. They will work for good ol' fashioned plinking.

I did the water jug thing, but it was fairly short range. I hit 6 jugs pretty quickly. Kinda draws a crowd with all the water geysers happening :-)

Not to date myself, but I had the very first model of the AimPoint Electronic (early red dot) sight mounted. My goal was to hit the last jug while some of the water from the the first jug was still airborne.
