Default HAM network lets get it started

I know full well that there are multiple HAM groups in the NM area that could be tapped, but I would like to get everyone interested and those poss. already licensed to poss. Elmer out the newbies in HAM radio.

This was a topic of discussion a while back and I say lets get it started.

Secondly a thread on this forum I was reading is about the #s.
IMO this is not a bad idea, and moreover if I am reading this correctly things are starting to crumble anyway.

I have had my license for a while now but I'm certainly no Elmer. I have not even used my HT for anything but listening. I have couple HAM clubs in the vicinity, but they meet at times that are not terribly friendly to my work schedule.

But the lack of response has kept me from making more of this so far.

HAM will be of the utmost importance if the gov goes after the guns and a new civil war erupts. Even if no gun grabbers, any emergency that could shut down the internet and cell phones would put us back in the stone age with regards to news and communication.

Personally I'm not into radio, although I do manage an archive that collects HAM and radio communication related photos and ephemera among 95 other collection areas. I don't know what equipment is needed for long distance communication. I understand you need a license to operate and possibly a humongous antenna.

The license is another issue with me. If I did get into long distance radio it would be unlicensed and for emergency only.

I'm aware this is a 2yr+ old thread, but rather than create a new one I figured it would be better to just comment here.

I hold an Extra class license and am a FCC volunteer examiner. Would be happy to help anyone in the NM area get licensed or mentor them as needed.

I've proposed this in my local area and got reluctance also. I'm not sure if it's that people don't want to or if people are afraid to.

You have realize that with only your call sign and the internet you can learn nearly all you need to know about a person. If call sign info available was limited to just the persons name and state/country there might be more people willing to get involved in a communication project.

Like it is, anyone knows where you live 2 minutes after hearing your call sign.

I belong to a ham group that meets for coffee on the 3rs Saturday of the month, just to shoot the breeze.

I'd be interested. I don't know anything about HAM, but one of my fellow Vets was our radio guy and can likely help me get started with basic radio repair concepts.

HAM is one of the next items on my list.

I would very much like to earn my HAM license, but I have memory issues, and the last time I tried, I was unable to pass the test, because of all of the technical jargon I could not retain. I have NO desire to build my own radio or "tweek" it for better performance. I would like to get a license, and purchase a quality Yuasu radio or some other brand, and simply have that additional means of communication.

I wish someone in western Kentucky could help me to get my General license or whatever would be sufficient to communicate among what will become the militia groups of 2021.

Hi Gravedigger, I had trouble retaining all the information so I went to a “Ham Cram” and it worked!

If they have them in your area you might give it a shot.

I am a HAM Extra, a Volunteer Examiner accredited by two agencies, and lead a weather net in my county. I'm interested in this. I don't mind helping others. No, I'm not interested in building my own radio either. I bought commercially rigs by Yaesu and ICOM and had help from other Elmers in installing those three years ago.

Question. Can I listen before licensing?

Yes, nothing prevents you from getting the equipment, programming it and becoming familiar with it. listening to the different repeaters etc is completely legal.

In passing the test, the best asset for me was a youtube channel "The Ham Whisperer".
