I found a 1997 Dodge 1500 truck 4wd with a 360 motor reg cab auto. Anyone here with experience with this yr truck? I know trans bad and the dash has problems etc. What makes it a sport and how can i tell? It has fog light and those star twisted type wheels. It has about 175,000 miles and a salvage title and dent/scratches on the right rear fender. I dont care about that it is older and a truck. Thanks

Wife's truck is a 1998 Dodge 2500. Hers has the 8L V-10, 5 sp NV4500 trans, and a Dana 80 rear end. Only problem I have with it is the paint. Damn **** flakes off every time the weather changes.

Your truck has a good motor. The trans has a lot of miles. Most auto trans can be rebuilt.
Another option is to find a used trans with fewer miles.

I have had no issues with the dashboard electronics.

I believe the sport came out in 99. The easiest way to tell is the headlights are a quad beam. I just recently picked up a 97 also. Not much experience with dodges though. The dash issue is just cracking. Mine has been good so far. I think all trucks have their issues. I know the trans is probably the least reliable part of the truck. Apparently mine was already replaced under 100k miles.

If the gas gauge quits working, you're within a year of having to replace the fuel pump.

Got a '97 2500 4x4 5.9L Cummins. Had the trans rebuilt at 210,000 miles for 3 grand. Dash problems? Never had any.
