Default Database software for archive management

While I am on the subject of archiving (see the post on archive media) can anyone suggest a good, simple, small footprint app to manage all of the data? Should be able to search by media, category (self defense, agriculture, etc) year, creator, etc. I would like to be able to open the file from within the database app.

I'm not sure about an app and if it would really be necessary, but you could just use the native file system to do the exact same thing, label your files in a defined standard as you save them into the file system using your criteria, separate them by folders into the larger criteria groups.

All you would need to do then is go to the main directory and wildcard search for whatever file you're looking for.

Archive can be offline, search first what you need and only bring online the part of the archive that has the data you want. I've used that to catalogue bunch of CDs like a decade ago.
