Looks like it might come in handy since there were no trees around.
Hanging an animal to clean and butcher.
Or if you filled a bucket of water inside, maybe you could swing it out the window on a rope?
Or lean your ladder against it to go up and adjust your TV antenna or satellite dish.
My real answer is:
I suppose they had to carry more sod onto the roof routinely to keep it from leaking. A pulley hooked to the top beam would make the task easier. Stand on the lower beam, to unload the sod.
One guy on the ground loads the sod and hoists it to the upper guy who unloads it and sends the little wood pallet back down to load more sod.
As forlorn as those folks look in the picture, (with that unmistakable "please kill me" expression on their faces), It might be so they can take turns hanging each other.
