Modern Man evolved and became successful as a species after the advent of agriculture. One of the first places where this happened strangely enough is along the Tigrus and Euphrates Rivers in modern day Iraq. Worldwide it is the proliferation of grains in particular that has allowed for major populationn increases. It does not matter if you are talking about wheat, rye, millet, oats, quinoa, amaranth, grains of paradise, rice, or many other crops, it is the staff of life. If you are allergic to one of them, avoid it and use another one.

Agriculture has a lot to do with our dominance as a country. Travel the Columbia and Snake Rivers and watch the wheat barges going down river headed for Asia. Wheat is an important bargaining chip for the US and supplies most people with important carbos, vitamins and minerals dailly. There are plenty of great small bakeries in the US now and there is no excuse to feed your family Wonderbread. Most supermarkets carry not only whole wheat, but a vast array of wheat based breads with nuts and seeds and other combinations of grains.

This whole arguement is a waste of time unless you happen to be allergic to wheat. Then there are at least ten other grains you can chose from.
