I am of the school of thought that feels every citizen should serve our country in some capacity. Using Israel as a quick example. Every Israeli has to serve a mandatory 2yrs in their military.

It would be nice if we did that here. Not exclusively military as most of us in this forum volunteered, but serve in some form like maybe 2 yrs as avolunteer emt, firefighter, auxillary LEO.

IMO it would help teach people responsibility and some self reliance. I know alot of folks would be against mandatory 2yr service but if not at a national level maybe just even at a local level.

sounds cheesy but as JFK said....

Thoughts?

just trying to spark some interesting discussion

Well I suppose it would create jobs for those who hunt down the others who won't do the service. Jobs to build jails to keep them, jobs for people to guard them, cook for them, ect....Then there will be those who say they won't serve next to women, liberals, gays, minorities or those of other religions. The people who WANT to serve know where to find the recruiters office.

Some people don't belong in the military, pure and simple. Forcing them into it accomplishes nothing except to make their co-workers and supervisors lives painful. I always joke that I'd love to see the draft brought back, to get all the hippies, communists, and anti-American idiots in today's youth a good taste of discipline and responsibility. But the truth is that those people would have nothing in common with many of their fellow draftees, would resent the hell out of the experience, and would likely contribute nothing of value to the military.

Plus, the draft is now politically undoable unless we start losing WWIII.

Agree, I have great disdain for all that never served who run around flapping their gums about things they know nothing of.

No. You want a 'draftee' to respond as the EMT or cop when you dial 911?

Besides, the government would probably allow people to staff gay or liberal crisis hotlines and then be considered vetrans as if they had worn the uniform.

nope just serving our country as a citizen of the United States. Not serving a specific administration or agenda. maybe the word "mandatory" just illicits too many negative feelings.

Not every Israeli does.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exempti...vice_in_Israel

Substantial percentages of both women and men avoid it. From everything I have read over the years-and the few Israeli expats I have spoken to- it's a divisive issue within Israel herself.

I am not in favour of compulsory service- in Australia we had National Service during Vietnam- and most Nasho's served bravely and well- an old OC of mine way back when was a Nasho and found he liked it so much he made the ADF his career.

Compulsory Civilian Service? It's a complicated road to go down. Many already do volunteer- either SES, Firies, Coasties (Here in Australia, I mean)and a thousand other things from dune care to aged care.
To make it compulsory, I dunno....

I do serve, by taking care of my family, holding down a productive job (and paying taxes from the money I earn from it), helping people who can't help themselves when I can, and doing my best to live in peace with others.

Good points made all around.

I was just thinking if you're young, healthy and able bodied that it could be a way for some the takers who we give our hard earned tax money to support to give back.

You're 18, not doing anything but enjoy all of our freedoms granted to us as citizens...beat your feet for 2 yrs and give back. I know this is a sore spot but it's just my own opinion.

Some people have better things to do at that age. Take, for example, an engineer that has an innovative idea that needs immediate attention and work. The nation is better served by allowing them to explore that possibility than stifling their entrepreneurial spirit.

If I had any fait in our federal government I would have enlisted voluntarily. However, I do not agree with any of their actions in the middle east. I personally feel they're unnecessary conflicts that are in no way protecting any of our freedoms here at home. I don't want to serve and possibly have to fight for something I do not agree with.

Cant agree more.
After 9/11 I walked off my job next day.
Got a call to be a project manager for
a DOD project.
FWIW, I have regrets now, as the tech is being turned against us, but at the moment,
nobody, no place, no act, could have kept me from doing what I do when asked to step up for this country. I still feel that way. I just don't like our Commander in Chief.

Serve the USA (Under Satanic Administration)?!!
You've got to be out of your mind here!!

Also, serve in our military?
What military? We (meaning the licensed consumers, formerly US citizens) do not have a "military" anymore... instead we have globalist wonks/cops/thugs/oath mumblers who wear the trappings of our "former US military."

You want more thugs to serve globalism?
This is crazy think.

Also you want the "Israeli model?!"
You want to model our mode of service on a highly socialist state?

Again this is crazy think.

Also we have enough government employees.

Actually we need to down size the mercenary/globalist/thug-force we presently have by about 60%... and turn them out into the street to pick up trash and scape the rust off of the falling-down bridges (useful work).

I dont consider myself or my brothers "wonks/thugs/ or oath mumblers." I respect your opinion but please don't resort to insults to describe people who put their sh*t on the line for you. Especially if we volunteered so you wouldnt have to.

I do agree with your point about downsizing govt. Some MOS shouldnt be there imo

respectfully
