Pro tip of the day - Always have your wheels straight before making your turn. Its not 100% but it significantly reduces your odds of getting pushed into the oncoming lane...this guy is lucky to be alive after the head on.

At 0:05 he starts turning his wheel getting ready to turn left beforehand..

Always stop a little short of the turn. Accelerate enough while going straight that if the engine stalls or you dork up on the clutch the vehicle has enough momentum to clear the lane.

As a motorcyclist, I watch my rear view every time I make a left turn or stop in a traffic lane. It's saved me several times, and the time I was rear ended in my car, I saw it coming but there was nowhere to go. On a bike I just split lanes and let them hit the car I just passed.

I recently invested in a pretty decent dashcam for my truck at work, after 12 years of commercial driving and more near misses to count. The peace of mind it provides is fantastic, but I'm still wanting to figure out a way for a rear view- or at least side view.

The three main defensive driving tactics I use are

1. keep distance in front of you at all times

2. don't get distracted - even for a couple of seconds- eyes on road always.

3. glance at what's happening in the back of you and sides every few seconds- it's almost as important as what's going on in the front of you.

This has kept me safe for 12 years of driving a tractor trailer, mainly inner city, for the entirety of my career.

Everyone gets distracted for a few seconds now and then, and usually all is good, but the one time there is a variable in that small time span- you're toast.

I have been in the driver's shoes who hit the suv in the video above, when I was 15, driving with only a learner's permit and fiddling with the radio. Slammed a car waiting to turn left and almost killed three people. No insurance on my mom's car I was driving. I spent the first year at my first job paying for the LifeFlight bill. It's definitely something I don't care to repeat.

another tip would be to pay attention to the cars behind you also. I will miss my turn and come back around because fools are not paying attention and going to fast behind me.
Seems like that some rare driving compared to a lot of what I see these days. Most drivers are like f them Im slamming on my brakes and turning.

Did you guys see the other drivers reaction at the end of the crash? Threw his hands up like 'wtf'..its still his fault regardless for crashing into him but did the dashcam guy use a turn signal?
