Doesn't tell me a thing. I've never heard of counts per minute. We measure radiation in REMs where I work.

No mention of them in this article about measuring radiation either:

REMs are a measure of biological damage, i.e the dose of radiation and the effect of the type of radiation on the body.
CPM is a measure of the number of disintegrations per minute.

Latest report very bad. Nichols says that we are being irreversibly harmed. Cobra maintains that there is some radiation, but that it is manageable. I plan on doing followup on this to get something more definitive.

Funny thing about radiation is, we don't know as much as we think we know about it. Pripyat should be a barren nuclear winter wonderland of death, but life is actually flourishing in the region. Could be that the life there adapted to it, which I feel is the most plausible explanation. Hell, prostitutes in parts of Africa that are riddled with AIDS have grown a strong resistance to it. Immunity to a retrovirus. That's unusual, but it's happening just as it's highly unusual that wildlife is sprawling all over Pripyat, even in the places people aren't allowed to go for obvious reasons. We have no idea how the radiation will effect us, or what it's doing to us now, and there's really nothing we can do about it except to trust that life will find a way to survive and endure. We'll probably all get cancer, though. That's almost guaranteed. I'm the only person in my family who hasn't gotten cancer yet, but it'll happen. It'll happen to most people I know, as well. It's almost as certain as death and taxes.

So I was looking at Bob's latest report...

http://www.veteranstoday.com/author/bobnichols/

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like he's using the background level for a Digilert 100 to interpret data from a different source.

I was just wondering if everyone realizes that normal background levels aren't the same for all instruments and that it's meaningless to compare levels across instruments the way he's doing?

For example the one I have right here shows about 3k cpm gamma (as it should) for normal background. If I place it over my granite countertop it goes up to about 7k cpm gamma. I have a 1950's alarm clock with radium painted hands that kicks out about 40k cpm gamma. I'm not sure where he's getting his numbers from, but if levels were 200x normal as he claimed my DoseRae PRM would be alarming continuously and the meter referenced above would be showing 600k cpm so something's not right with his numbers.

When your radiation gauge is high, your wine gauge needs to be high too. Get on the stick, Bob's convinced you're frying as we speak.
