Default Liquor stores running out of Everclear - homemade hand sanitizer

Advertise Here

I heard people were making hand sanitizer out of aloe vera gel and everclear, so I dropped by the local liquor store to get a bottle of Everclear.

One of the employees usually worked at another liquor store, and he told me the other store was almost out of Everclear. He also told me people had been buying cases of whiskey just in case the Texas governor ordered the liquor stores to close.

There is a news article saying Utah has limited to sale of Everclear.

So, who is making homemade hand sanitizer?

Has anyone been to a liquor store? If so, what did the clerk have to say?

Methylated spirits with water at 70:30 mixture makes a great hand sanitiser and general disinfectant. Do you have something similar in the USA? It’s 95% ethanol, 5% methanol - 100% pure bug killing alcohol. Costs a few dollars per litre.

Default Homemade hand sanitizer

Hi Kev - Have not been in a liquor store recently. I used to work on gas meters as a contractor for Delmarva Power. Our work took us into incredibly filthy homes in inner city Wilmington. Some " low income " housing had sewage leaking in the basement and the walls seemed to shimmer from swarming roaches. I have done jobs where the roaches dropped from the ceiling joist and bounced off my hardhat.

We had to wash up and eat while on the road. I carried two dish soap bottles filled with plain water and a bar of soap in a plastic camping box. Paper towels for drying the hands. Not very convenient but I never got sick once.

We have this stuff called Everclear, it is something like 90% alcohol.

Interesting about Utah. Just the other day I read that two distilleries here in Utah (Gasp!) are now making hand sanitizer and giving it away.

Everclear and Pharmco used to be 190 proof pure grain alcohol, the same as kept on board US Navy ships in WW2 for sterilizing surgical instruments, known as "sick bay alcohol."

Torpedo fuel was the 5% methanol, 90% ethanol mix colored with a red dye, so that sailors would not drink it. One shot and you'd barf your guts out until the next dog watch and receive an Article 15.

Current Everclear and Pharmco product is 151 proof (about 75% ABV) grain alcohol and not bad at all when you fill your grog mug with crushed ice and pour a gill cup over it and let it melt for a while.

Must vary by state, here PGA = 195 proof > 90% ABV

I have kept a few bottles in the preps but hand sanitizer had never occurred to me until all this started. Feel even better about having it now.

I haven't been to the liqueur store but I keep a flask of everclear in my trifold med kit. I've used it for everything from cleaning the head on my motorcycle and 3D printer to cleaning cuts. I hear it even works on cowardice. I got it out to see how good it evaporates off your hands and I'm sure it would work fine.

What we have in the States is called Everclear -- it's 95% ethyl alcohol, and we buy it wherever hard alcohol is sold. It has big warnings not to drink it straight up!

I was at my local adult beverage store last week to pick up something to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and the clerk did mention to me that Everclear was literally flying off the shelves.

Is it ok to use ever clear hand sanitizer and drive?
Will the cops believe that you are not drunk, just sanitized?

Soap and water actually is more effective all round than alcohol based sanitiser and if you are troubled by psoriasis best to go easy on alcohol based sanitiser.
A sliver of soap in a ziplock bag and a small bottle of water , 40 seconds of washing and a quick rinse if your on the road.

For those interested in longer term stuff you can always build a still and start producing your own grain alcohol

Stuff in the survival files section can help

How to make a still https://www.survivalistboards.com/do...do=file&id=347

Home distillation handbook https://www.survivalistboards.com/do...o=file&id=1214

Don't do everclear here my husband was drinking it straight for a while and some very bad behavior.

When I did go to the liquor store for a supply run I noted they were out of Fireball. I got a 50 ml of something generic to see what all the fuss is about, but apparently, in NW Houston, "Fireball" is good for what ails you. It is a cinnamon whiskey.
