Default So my off grid project is starting.

I was faced with a decision. I could buy 2 acres in my neighborhood, 25 about 45 minutes away or 79 acres 3 hours away. All three were about the same price. I chose the 25 acres 45mins away. I would like the 79acres but at 3 hours away I would barely get to visit it. 45 minutes would let me enjoy it every weekend if I choose. Itís an old farm. The barns and house is collapsed. The fields are overgrown but itís over looks a state park. The south slope has been terraced with thousands of feet of awsome rock walls. I am closing September 9. I stoked as land near Charlotte is hard to find.

Thanks, I actually have about 10 acres here to play with but building an off grid cabin directly behind my house doesnít have the same charm to it. I was wanting a place for the family that didnít have a place to charge a phone. Where the kids rode 4wheelers instead of video games.

Congrats on your new property! We looked north of Charlotte near Mount Airy and Statesville but couldn't find anything we liked ( before we got our property in Virginia) about 5 years ago. It looked like lots of farm land was already being turned into housing areas. It's very hard finding cheap, decent farms near large cities. But we didn't want to be anywhere near a large city.
Good luck developing it!

Wow nice, congrats!

Now, get yourself a decent dirt fishing rod and unearth some historical goodies, before the earth is disturbed. Then, hit it again when it is.

I was looking up there but it was little farther then. I wanted. This property is not to far west at the base of south mountain state park.

I was thinking the same thing. The drive way is .39 miles long. So it’s not going to be cheap. The fields have been fallow for so long they are pretty much young forest. I am hoping a bulldozer will push the roots out.

Congratulations! What is you ultimate plan for the property? Retirement or simply BOL?

My drive is a little longer, and I have paid good money to maintain it. Iím fortunate that a neighbor homesteader has a bulldozer and excavator who rents it to me for cheep for various project. Isnít the ground pretty hard packed clay and rock? Should be a pretty good foundation for the road.

Iím originally from the mountains of Virginia. You should be able to easily grow apples and peaches. With some work, you should be able to grow great vegetables too.
