I tried War Thunder and its, ehhh, not to bad. Does anyone know of any good WW2 figher games that they like, esepcially if it has a single player campaign.

Back in the 4 color 286 processor days, there was a game called Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. Very basic graphics, basic flying, but it was fun. All of the new games I've tried are trying to be so realistic in their flying that I find them to be no fun.

My favorite was Aces Over Europe and Aces Over the Pacific back in the day!

ILM Sturmovick was probably the last great flight sim before the nonsense arcadey ones took over.

War Thunder is ok but takes a lot of messing and tweaking to get right. Plus certain game modes are poor for certain types of plane etc.

Janes had one. Still sold on ebay.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane%27s_WWII_Fighters

You could fly British, American, or German aircraft. Including the Mustang P-51 and ME-262.

It was pretty neat. You could let autopilot do most of the stuff getting you there and back home, but you had to perform during the ground attack or furball. Only thing was the simulation doesn't autostop when the mission was over.

It also has insane levels of virtue signaling with affirmative action characters as well.

I used to love Fighter Ace. I loved the realistic mode, but very few people would play that mode. I gave up on fighter sims after they went away. They were either arcade type or just too complicated to play.

Microsoft Combat simulator was very real, but too realistic at times with the under powered planes. I need a joystick for windows 10 to break it back out.

Any game from the series of Il-2 Sturmovik. Great quality of simulation!

The best, ever, for me has been European Air War:

After playing that, all other WW2 fighter games haven't come close. It's the only fighter simulator that's given me a sense of height and movement in 3d space.

It's single player campaigns for both Axis and Allies are robust, with ranks, records and decorations, and the level of realism settings are expansive - you can toggle just about everything to your liking.

Radio chatter starts calm when in formation, and voices get stressed and loud in combat, and every sort of mission is accounted for.

Blackouts, red outs, stalls, rounds flying through and holing your cockpit window... I can't promote European Air War enough.

The only problem is, EAW is an older game, so you'll have to tweak it a bit to get it running on new PCs. However there are tonnes of fansites with help, and great mods that keep this game alive and updated.

Another one that's really enjoyable is Crimson Skies, though it's ahistorical and alternative fiction. It's got AAA voice acting, great music and a heroic, outlandish 'Blackhawk' style plot, but what makes it super fun are the plane concepts, damage and hit locaters and dogfights.

It has some of the most beautiful weather programming and cloud cycles to be seen in flight sims. Even though it's not historical WWII, it's worth a try for the great flight simulation and aircraft concepts.

Again, an older game, so it will require some minor tweaking to run on modern rigs, but well worth it.
