Everyone thinks about staying warm in a sleeping bag(naturally), but another thing to think about is your size vs. the sleeping bag. I think of the military surplus as being made for lean, mean fighting machines, not middle aged desk jockeys (like me). I ended up getting a Big Agnes for the extra room so I didn't have to sleep with my arms crossed across my chest all night. I found out the hard way why they call them a mummy bag. My ECSW was very warm, however. I sweated so much that it collected on the roof of the tent and rained on us. The inside of the bag was dry, happily. I got mine from Sportsman's Guide and have no complaints other than the circumference.
