I think I know why it broke up into 3 parts once it hits the atomspeher it gets really hot and the ice melts and disapaears breaking the rocks up into smaller chunks thats why it breaks in the air. Just freeze 2 rocks togther then throw it over a heater and you can see the same thing
they break up for the same reason the space shuttle columbia broke up. rentry, even in the best of situations is an incredibly violent event and many objects cant take the forces involved.

Anyway, now they say that it is certain the asteroid and meteorite had nothing to do with each other. Sure we have meteors all the time, stuff that burns to nothing so it won't hit the ground, so one bigger is not really an anomaly. Just weird coincidence... I guess.

the sun just blew its rings A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was captured lifting off the Sun earlier this evening. This image shows the plasma cloud as seen from the STEREO Behind spacecraft. The CME is also visible in the latest Lasco C3 imagery, however it so far looks to be directed mostly towards the north and east. This latest CME was most likely the result of a prominence eruption. More updates to follow if necessary. look out power grid!! 1800"s on the way

I'm not saying its a major major event or a portent of doom or anything, I just find it mildly alarming that meteors of a destructive size aren't detected at all, and 2012 DA14 was only discovered a year ago, what if it had been on a collision course? Doesn't give us much time to react.

If one that big was going to hit us I'm not sure it would be a good idea to let some folks know, at this time nothing can be done to avoid it, and they would have no idea where it would hit until the last few minutes, not enough time to evacuate.
Even If the meteor didn't vaporize you, a planet in panic before it hit surely would... and if that didn't get ya the 3 year winter after would. :( Seriously tough times for anyone that somehow survived the initial blast/impact/tide wave/earthquake/firestorm/or awakening of Godzilla.

But say for example 2012 DA14 was on a collision course with us and we had found out a year ago, it isn't an extinction event type rock just a city killer etc, it would give us a year for everyone to prep so we don't have social breakdown. I'm sure there are lots of rocks out there on a collision course with earth, some might be 10.000 years away some could be 2 years away who knows? I would have thought it would make sense to fund looking for them.

Its the biggest KNOWN since Tunguska.

Since 7/10 is water and we have the ice caps there is a lot of room for one or more to have entered without anyone reporting it.

I would give the chance of one in every 50 years.
but you could also have one in the next year.
