Hi, Not a regular here but thought some here who are concerned about bears in their camp at night would want to know about this.
This is intended as a floating emergency shelter but I could see this doing double duty as a very safe tent for camping. Except for the price ($4000USD) and maybe a little more room to stretch out, it seems to fit the profile for the first portable (meaning by pickup truck) bear-proof camping shelter.
The two videos below (one in English, the other, Japanese), show that it is lightweight (can be picked up by two people as the second video shows, probably just yourself, if you're strong), it is designed to withstand being knocked around in a hurricane and would take a tremendous amount of pressure to collapse (probably much more than a bear could summon), etc.
Again, the price tag might be a deal breaker for most but if you really think you need such a shelter and want that extra feeling of confidence at the campsite, this shelter is actually not just another concept. It is available for purchase right now.
In fact, I know of two companies that make very similar shelters and will link both below the videos. (web sites are in Japanese, though)
