So spent about 3 hrs today building another workbench which is good and solid and have about $30 in materials. I kept all dimensions wheras I had little waste. I used drywall screws as I learned you have to remove one leg to get the bottom shelf in or you could cut it in half and slide each side in, no big issue.
Dimensions are 68" long by 28" wide by 35" tall. Material list as follows with prices
Solid core door at Habitat restore-$5
2x4x96 qty 6 per bench $3.07 each-$18.42
2 1/2 drywall screws-$7.00 enough to build about 4 of these
3/8 ply wood-free from previous project

Looks nice. Drywall screws are brittle, the gold colored ones have better heat treatment and don't cost a lot more.
Ill keep that in mind for the next one although Ive never had any problems with the drywall screws and have been using them for years. I dont expect to put more than a few hundred lbs on these but have had as much as 500lbs on them with no issues.

i've used the long drywall screws on many a work bench. I've set as much as a little over 1600 lbs on them...never a problem, however, i dont skimp on them either, or maybe i'm just lucky.

anyways, nice job, it looks like it will work great!...one question; what style lockset are you going to install? :)

Nice. I'll have to get some pictures of mine, I used rough cut 2x4 oak and elm laid on edge and laminated to make a 4"x36"x84" surface, then laminated some 2x6 to make 6x6 legs. Bolted some cheap used roller cabinets under the surface with the wheels taken off and made a few shelves, then bolted one of my old blacksmith vises on one corner and an old 5" swivel Record vise on the opposite corner. It's kinda hefty.

Nice bench! I've been thinking of making a desk/bench like this once I need a new one or move to a bigger place.

Hidden compartment in bottom is good idea. Make sure those are concealed hinges, or it will be easy to spot for someone looking.

Looks great. Depending on how braced the lower shelf is to the legs, additional cross members on the sides and back can really stiffen the bench up. It varies by project and lumber, yours may be plenty for what you need/have built.
