We pressure can all our meat, bought on sale in bulk at half price. Post SHTF and there are no stores, or electricity, you'll want to know how to preserve any meat you kill. We keep about 120 pounds of chicken, beef, ham & turkey on the food shelves in the basement.

Don't wait for an emergency to begin gathering supplies and learning to pressure can.
I pressure can a lot of meat as well, bought on sale for cheap and as much as I can get. The only veg and fruit I've canned is what's been given to me for free. Commercially canned is cheaper.

Stay away from WalMart's "Mainstay" brand canning jars....these are cheapo made-in-China jars using THINNER glass, and easier to break, especially in a pressure canner.

I used three cases of WM. no breaks, no problems.
I did mostly squash/tomato and green beans so maybe longer-duration stuff is a problem.

I can get a dozen 1qt balls jars with new lids here for $8.00. The half gallon Ball jars are $12.00 for 6 @ the farm store.
Ace Hardware stores charge $10.99 per case of 6 64 ounce (1/2 gallon) wide mouth Mason jars with lids and bands.

If you order online it's $11.99 for the same, but I found that should the jars be ordered from directly inside the store, it's a dollar cheaper.

I was not able to get Lowe's to ship them, even weeks ago when the half-off sale first started. They told me stock was limited to what was in the stores, and my local stores were sold out back in September. I ended up ordering from K-Mart thanks to a post here on the forum in the daily deals thread. The cost ended up being about 60 cents for a jar with lid and ring - good deal for me!

When Ace has the brown paper bag 25% off sale each year I load up on the 1/2 gallon jars and lids.

One thing that worries me about used jars that you don't know the history. Who knows what was kept in the jars in the past, galvanized nails, lead head nails, paint?

I may be a worry wart but this really makes me cautious using used jars. Chances are they're probably fine but...........................

Glass is nonpermiable, wash well and soak in simmering water. No worries!

OK, I have a thought - Basic English 101.

"No child left behind" . . . yeah, that works.
Yes, this bothers me too. However, i often post while I am on the treadmill or elliptical from my ipad or phone. This can make one appear stupid. Just something for all of us to consider.

Also,
I am from Kentucky. The 49th dumbest state, just ahead of Hawaii, just behind Commiefornia:D:

You understood what was written down Lono, sounds like your one of them that got left behind to be able to communicate with them. Send them a PM if you have an issue not brought up by the OP post, if the post was about "how is my English" then great. Sorry you are to smart or perfect to be here with us retards, most are here to learn

Same here. I will freely take them from people I know, but I'm hesitant to get them from people I don't know. I have not had to worry much about it because in my area I rarely see them used for a reasonable price - most times they are just as much or even more $ than just buying them brand new. When I've seen them for free, they only have 5 or 6 of them and it'd cost me more in gas to go get them than they are worth.

I scored nearly 100 of them from my gramma, and a lady from church every now and then gives me some. I have no problem with those.

I started canning this past summer and fall. I found it to be very rewarding and great knowledge for the future. Kroger usually sells a case of quart jars for about $10. You can always look for coupons in the paper or online.

We canned tons of stuff in non-mason jars.

Take different sized lids with you when grocery shopping. Buy stuff that comes in jars the right size to use for canning once they are empty.

Give different sizes of canning lids to the kids of friends and family, to measure jar mouths with. Give 'em a dollar for every 5 jars they save for you.
