been ready for months.

*grumbles* I didn't get a deer tag again this year so it will be another year of only elk for us. We have been staking out our areas that we will be hunting and looking for signs of elk. I got a really good spot I found last year that I am going to try out this year and so far the signs are promising.

How is your hunting structured out there? Is there a lottery pick for deer tags? Are you required to have elk tags as well?

Out on my side of the state we have a lottery for both deer and elk however you can get just second season elk tag or an archery deer tag with no lottery. On the west side of the state you can just flat out get your deer tag and be done with it no lottery. We have to many enviro nuts that have caused the state to muddy up our hunting regs. My side of the state, east and almost to Idaho, is where most people come out to hunt to get away from the city folk granted it is the city folk that come out here. Last year I found a lost hunter and drove him a good 30 miles back to his camp site (he had dropped over a ridge and got lost).

Anyway basically out here the only things that we can hunt with just the hunting permit is small game critters and varmints and the like. Deer, elk, cougar, bear, turkey, big horns, mountain goats and antelope all require tags out here. Oh and some birds require a stamp.

Don't feel bad. I finally draw a deer tag. First one in ten years, and I put 111e instead of 011e. One of my five choices, and damned if I didn't get that one. Now I have a tag that is way too far to go for a mule deer. So freaking sad. So instead of a deer trip I am going to go for an extra sagehen trip or two.

I am itching something fierce. August 1st was first day of squirrel season here, but it's so dang hot that it would be terrible to go.

I have plans with friends to go dove hunting on opening day of September 1st, and also on September 3rd.

Last Saturday I received my firearm deer tag for this year. I think that comes in November 16th for first season.

I really need to get back into bow hunting for deer. That comes in October 1st.
