I can tell you why, without a doubt, Hitler is more hated. Someone touched upon it up there but didn't elaborate.

It wasn't just the Jews, it was the PICTURES of the Jews he murdered.

You show people piles and piles of rotting bodies, gas chambers, barbed wire fences, concentration camps ect.... it makes it all VERY REAL. Real in a way that none of the others have been shown. Ya, there are photos of the others. But none hold the magnitude of the pictures of what Hitler did.

Every time I see those pictures it brings me down. THAT'S why Hitler is at the top of the list. You can't ignore or forget those pictures.
Hitler, sadly, is not an anomoly:

And ... just in case you were thinking that this sort of thing only happens in backwater, third world hell holes like the Soviet Union and Cambodia ...

When I was typing the OP I couldn't remember Stalin for the life of me. It seems people would have a greater hatred for him than Hitler since he killed several million more people than Hitler. I think one poster had it right about the pictures making a difference. Hitler liked photo documentation of his atrocities whereas Stalin liked to cover his up by censorship.

I know Kim Jong-Il is an irritating little twit of a dictator to us, but I wonder how his own people feel about him? Especially the ones sitting in a prison for "political" crimes? The poor Koreans have been dealing with this meglomaniac family for several decades.

But you still never hear people calling someone a Stalin or Mao for their beliefs. Heck most people wouldn't even get offended by it because they have no clue the damage those two caused. But call someone a Nazi and the SHTF. AND all three were dictators and murdering within 20 yrs of each other.

Hell didn't Pol Pot eat his own peole? Or am I confusing him with Ide Amin???
no they just killed 75% of the population of cambodia

was so bad the army of vietnam had to go in and squash it

Michael Moore.......

Stalin probably killed more. Prior to WWII, his "great purge" the official Soviet record was 1.5 million detained, 681,000 just shot on site. At least 100,000 of those were priests, monks and nuns, who were just killed for because they were people of faith. You know the actual figure was probably a great deal more. You could have been a military officer, a political adversary, or just an average schmoe. It didn't matter. Some were rounded up arbitrarily as an "enemy of the state", given a 1 hour "Troika" show-trial, and shot.

There are actual documents signed by Stalin showing his comments like "the executions need to be 6,000 per month. Find more people!"

He then intentionally starved out approximately 5 million Ukrainians through his collectivization and seizure of food.

And that was before WWII!

After WWII, Stalin re-opened some Nazi death camps as forced labor camps for POWs. About 1 million Germans just disappeared.

Another 1.5 million other "enemies of the state" entered Stalin's gulags, and never came back.

Total estimate Stalin willingly had killed are somewhere in the 10 million mark.

Hitler is no slouch, but Stalin did most of his damage during peacetime, and against his own people. People in the gulags would write letters home, praising Stalin, having no idea he was the one behind their demise.

Just goes to show you, whether left or right, totalitarianism kills!

Yes, Hitler. Compare any person or any situation to Hitler or the Nazis and you have just opened up a can of worms. (or a PR nightmare)

My question is, prior to Hitler's rise to power, who did people hate with the same magnitude?

I find it strange that Lenin and Mao also killed millions of people, albeit by starvation and not gassing them, but I don't see them conjuring up as much hate as speaking the name Hitler.

Who else in history incurs as much wrath as Hitler?
BTW, you're thinking of Stalin, not Lenin. A lot of people hated King George (England), Caesar Augustus (Rome), and tons others. Unfortunately, until recently the conquered did not write the history books

Hitler is more hated because of the fact of genocide. Unfortunately other genocides have not been as popularized.

It seems people blame the Jews for being a group that has stood up and screamed NEVER AGAIN. Other attempted genocides, people haven't stood up and screamed as loudly. Is it the Jews fault that people won't listen?

I agree, I think Stalin and his insatiable paranoia makes Adolph look like a school girl. I'm always amazed by those who use to refer to this monster as "Uncle Joe".
