I am a prepper,But lately i have been doing some thinking.Lets say the economy does fall and all crap breaks loose. What or who would be stopping any country that hate us from setting off a necular bomb here? Will we survive even if we do prep?We will have no defence sytems running,so they could do it.What do you guys think?;)

Actually, enlistment has gone way up already since the economy has tanked. My DH is in the Army and we know MANY soldiers who enlisted because they were laid off or couldn't find a job and couldn't support their families. I know people who are in the military because their spouse or child has medical needs and they can't get adequate medical coverage in the civilian world. Believe me.. Tricare can be frustrating at times, but it is WAY better then civilian insurance!

And they are "sort of" turning people away. There was a time when enlistment was down and they were offering big bonuses to get people to enlist. They were also letting more people in who they would normally turn away. Lots of people were allowed in on moral waivers, etc.. Now that enlistment is up, they're back to turning people away that they'd have let in a few years ago. All because the economy is in the toilet..

What would happen if the government was unable to pay military wages? Or any LE for that matter. I'm sure that many would be honour bound to stay in and continue doing their job until things got better, but surely there would still be a good number that would not feel the same way?

Think of the depression. We still had a military.

If the economy collapses, it will be the welfare crowd that you will have to worry about. When their checks are stopped they will cause problems.

There will be shortages of everything that the rest of us will have to deal with.
Back in that depression people still had a sense of respect for their fellow man but these days its a dog eat dog world and anarchy will be king. People have lost their empathy and have greater selfish tendencies.
Time to be afraid if everything breaks loose.

Why would another Country waste a nuke If things were that bad already? More worried about a take-over from UN or China , they would want to keep everything in tack, so it could be used again, not blow it up. As they say 'Don't count on anyone but yourself" hope for best expect to worst.

I agree with the OP that it is a risk. Terrorists might do it. We have no defence and there is no way to prep against it, and so I do not think much about it.

I considered it, decided that I could do nothing, and then turned my attention to what I COULD prepare for!

That actually almost happened a couple of months ago when the government couldn't agree on a budget and threatened to shut down. The deadline was fast approaching and Pres. Obama said he would NOT approve anymore extensions. We were all preparing to NOT get paid for an undetermined amount of time until a budget was approved. Of course, all military members were expected to show up for duty as normal. The commissaries were going to shut down and all "non-essential" government employees would be laid off. Soldiers were told that they would eventually get back pay, but none of us were going to get paid at all until a budget was agreed upon.

Lots of panicking going on. I was FRG leader at the time and I had wives calling me freaked out because they live paycheck to paycheck, no savings, no preparations at all and had no idea how they were going to make rent, etc.. We were being told to warn people to prepare to not get paid, contact all creditors, where to apply for AER loans or rental/utility assistance through USACares..

Of course, at the very last minute, they all agreed on a budget and everyone ended up getting paid. Crisis averted. But it was an eye opening experience for many military members and their families!

I am on SSI (as many here know) and I've always wondered what would happen if the govt was suddenly unable to pay. There are freeloaders, yes, but many are truly unable to work and would be up s**t creek without a paddle in the last boat if SSI was cut off. Most autistics are survivors, we'd find ways to make it, for the most part. But what about say quadriplegics? They'd simply die. At some point it will be survival of the fittest. Also, I think the welfare crowd isn't as weak as we say they are. Many sell drugs or such to "supplement" their bennies. If the bennies were cut off, they'd find ways to make it.

Been there done that.

We don't need to worry about another country nuking us. We are killing ourselves with all the leaking nuclear plants across the country. Like time bombs waiting for an earthquake or a grid failure to set them off.
I think the terrorists have better options than trying to sneak a nuke into the country. First, getting it in isn't the hard part, it's transporting it undetected.
Anyway, instead of blasting a single city, they could more easily, and with considerably greater effect, set one off near that volcano in the Azores that's set to fall into the ocean. Assuming it worked as planned ( and they did it before it happens naturally),that would send a tsunami across the Atlantic, and wipe out everything from the Florida Keys to Maine. :(

if the dollar does collapse it doesnt necessarily mean the gov desolves. it just means the dollar has lost so much value that its not worth much.and that the gov cant pay its debts it owes to other countries.yes there will be riots and chaos. but the gov will still be here.

the army will still be there as well as the air force, marines, and the navy as well as our anti-nuclear arsenal.

just look at all the outher countries that have had an economic collapse... did their gov go away??? no some gov officails left office. only iceland actually changed their entire gov but for the most part all gov's maintain control.

Blaming the poor and being fearful of them is a good meme, but it's generally not the historical pattern. If you look at other nations that have collapsed or faced mass starvation, the poor generally just starve & die (Cambodia, Stalinist Russia, Ethiopia, etc.).

What you'll really need to worry about is the mafia in charge who love a good collapse. It gives them rationale for selling off national assets to private (and even foreign) interests. Probably a lot of money passes under the table and the nation is invaded economically.
