HA! You beat me to it!
Rido58-- I read Lucifer's Hammer when it came out back in the '70's. I JUST finished re-reading it last week and it's still very good by today's standards. It wasn't even a "genre" back then. Be aware it's in the 70's so it's dated, but you might get a kick out of the old views and lifestyle. And the people back then had no preparation because TEOTWAWKI wasn't even part of pop culture.

Be aware, it kinda drags a bit in the beginning, while you're learning who's who, but once the comet hits (spoiler alert) it's a page-turner. I don't know why it hasn't been made into a movie. It would have been prohibitively expensive before CGI, etc., but I bet someone's working on a script somewhere.

If you have a Kindle I could send it to you.... :)
Surfs up, dude!!

Wolf and Iron.
This is one I like...written a while ago but some of the ideas are now mainstream... Like an electric bicycle that recharges from a flexible solar blanket.
You have to suspend belief sometime but I enjoyed the read and some of it hits home as not all the hero's survive.
The same author has written some other post apocalyptic books as well.

-This sounds like "In Iron Years" also by Dickson.
-I thought the location and construction of his "cave" was suspect from an engineering standpoint.

We just spent the afternoon out in a big valley with a well established ranch compound in a remote location. We were up the side canyons and it was strangely like the set up in wolf and iron... Some hillsides of compacted decomposed granite that could be dug into, lots of trees down on the ground and even some bear sign....
