How very presumptuous of you to tell other people you don't know that they have no clue about real disasters. I doubt you're the disaster preparedness template yourself. At least I know who I won't be listening to on these forums, please, by all means. Continue to weed yourself out.:thumb:
Anybody who's been in a real disaster would NOT have the attitude that they would lend a hand to help a friend just becasue they didn't have food. That's REAl life. Let's get real.

Well, considering that you probably didn't read the entire response I gave in order to assume that's what I said, you're right.

I didn't say that. I said, that I'm not going to help people who have the means to help themselves and just refused to. Not having food has nothing to do with it. What DOES have something to do with it is a person who makes wise cracks about your preps and then comes knocking on your door for their share when the SHTF. It's not my JOB to help everyone. It's my JOB to help my family. That's the commitment I made to them. I owe no one else a damned thing.

When you tell someone to be prepared, or at least TRY to be, and they mock you and tell you you're overreacting etc, or just don't bother because they'd rather live in their own little world, what the hell do you expect?!

You can't help everyone, you just can't and to think that it's somehow someone's responsibility to give out what they have made for themselves is pretentious BS. And if you think for one minute that your neighbors wouldn't turn their backs on YOU given a situation like that, you're fooling yourself.

The biggest mistake you can make is to trust the general public. But, by all means, go ahead and try to save the world. I won't be joining you. I'll be trying to survive and help my children do that. And you can't strong arm everyone else into thinking your way. Period.

Thankfully, I don't know a tremendous amount of people who aren't already doing something, even the smallest things. So, I doubt I'm going to be turning away friend in droves. But, I'll tell you one thing, disasters are all relative to whom you ask, and what I may or may not have been through is information you aren't privy to. I don't need your approval of my stance on this subject to go ahead with it.

We all have different opinions, something we'll all just have to live with. Have a nice night, I won't be back and forthing with you on this subject any further.

First off you guys have got to realize that " letsgetreal" is always right, knows everything, and if you don't think the way he does, then your never ever ever gonna live out the next thunderstorm that is as close as 500 miles away. After all, he swears up and down that we don't need trucks to deliver any type of commodity, the choo choo will be able to do that. I have seen him on several different threads now and he argues the same point, "he's right your wrong and as always england prevails". It is my most intimate feeling that he may be either FX JOHN or his relative.

Now with that being said, as far as I'm concerned, if somebody is too damn lazy to prep, then that is their own fault. I don't work my butt off to give it away to those who are way to lazy to help themselves. I won't help either one of my brothers because they are both to lazy to prep or even so much as train. As for you "letsgetreal" ever heard the story of the ant and the grasshopper?

Don't tell me to chill out, you speak your mind and I'll speak mine. IMo, you aint no friend if you buddy up to them now, but plan to dump them PSHTF, I guess that's why I don't have a bunch of buddies, but the REAL friends I do have are life long REAL friends and I can count on them and they can count on me.......plus , you have NO clue about REAL disaster. BTw, Until folks get on board with reality, it's never enough........PSHTF, folks will need other folks, no matter what they have or not. Btw, I don't know what happened to Mike Fox, I left Hamilton in '76 and never looked back, but that wasn't the point of it and you missed that too. IMO, you don't know much either.
You're in Hamilton? well, this isn't opinion, this is fact..... I have MUCH family in Hamilton and New Miami ( ever hear of Couch's Grocery or Camper Corral? )and Butler County..I graduated from Fairfield HS... I have 3 generations in Hamilton. I know all of Butler County....yeah, emt, huh? My uncle( Ben Fox) was the Chief of Police....his son, Mike Fox, was a State Rep.....I have a dozen relatives who're cops in Butler County......it's a small world.
I don't know, but I think these could be construed as threats to you.

I have friends who make 6 figures and their pantries look the same. They eat out all the time just about. I asked a couple of them how much they spend on food every month. One said about $100 and the other said about $50. I then asked how much they spend with eating out. Both responded with "Oh, about $700."

Ridiculous.
A friend of my moms is like that. She invited us over to hang out and stuff, and when lunch time rolled around, she asked what everyone wanted. As usual, I said anything is fine with me. Same for mom, and a few other folks that were there. Her son comes downstairs and she asks him. Pizza, then he walks back upstairs. She didnt even have to look up the number, it was saved to her Iphone! After she ordered my mom asked her why she doesnt just cook for the family, because she says that they have every meal either at a restaurant or take out. She said that she cant cook, and when she tries, her husband and son wont eat it and just toss it. I couldnt believe it when she said that. It just amazes me that people are like that. I eat out maybe once a month, usually less.

About a year ago I thought about hooking up my extra room with a homemade hydroponic garden. Seems to me a small 20-30 square foot hydroponic garden could supplement meals indefinitely. Add in a few frozen deer a year and a box of cans and you're set.

It would work, here in SFla. such a room would make you a "grow house". Power co. down here monitor power useage and report anything unusual to LEO.

I dearly wish I had the preps to share with all my family/ friends, even enough to "pay" others for their help. I Don't and doubt I'll ever will. I'm left with no choice but to turn others away. Thats why I advocate the need to form "survival" groups with the like minded. (If you weaken the others won't) I've realized that even within my group we all are at different point in our prepping. We have agreed to share. But have also agreed that we at least need to be somewhat close in our prepping. Anyone who slacks off and expects to be supported knows better to show up. Of course we take each others word on their preps, so its important to trust each other. This is something that really shouldn't even have to be said. Sad to say the important thing is not to be in a position with someone going one on one with family/friend. If things turn "bad" the last thing you want is to be in a "fair" fight. Bottom line you, your family, your group can't afford to lose. In a SHTF situation the one thing you can count on is that reality is going to S**K Big Time!

you're counting on the power staying on huh?

Some people make bold proclamations about turning hungry people away during some type of disater. I personally would find that very difficult to do, it's easy to say you could but when your face to face with hunger it may change your mind.

The truth is nobody knows what they will do unto you are in the place...I just hope and pray that I am never in that place to have to make that choice. Offering kindness to someone always finds a way of coming back to you in good ways and in reverse as well.

Man, roger that. I *plan* on turning away hungry people but actually doing it is another matter.

My hope is that the great unprepped masses will just quietly die at home or go to gubment camps or whatever and not bother me. I somehow think this is unrealistic.

And these guys are lucky. Friend of mine only had a dry onion and a half full bottle of vodka in his fridge. And when my wife and me tried very politely to warn him, his answer was "the lord will provide". So we just STFU and opened another beer, starting to talk about something else.He lost his job and now live with his parents...but he´s happy...(we guess)

I'm going to start this off by saying I'm not religious in the least.

I don't understand this whole "the lord will provide" sh*t. Isn't it enough that he was (presumably) able bodied and could work for a living? I keep getting reminded of that story about the man who didn't want to be saved from the flood because he thought god would save him - when in fact it was god who sent the rescue workers.

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the bible there's got to be something about not being a lazy sod and doing your bread labour or something like that.

A Different Perpective...

Well, we've had some bad family news... involving two forms of cancer and about 6 months to live (if that) for a close family member.

In the meantime, to take my mind off things, I downloaded that "lights out" document from the download area of this forum. I have been reading that for probably 3-4 days.

There is sooooo much in that story. Things that one wouldn't think of unless presented in that particular format. Really a good read for a different perspective on how one must be constantly thinking ALL the time... and it seems that good deeds had a way of coming back around. As they usually do.

I'm also beginning to think that the best way to keep your sanity, and your family anywhere near safe would be to have a larger system working with other systems in the area. In this particular story - if "Mark" had kept everything he had (including the well water) all to himself, he would have been quickly and quietly killed. He would have not had the larger network of people to help him protect "Silver Hills" - nor would he have had anyone WILLING to help him. See my point?

By doing what he could, when he could - and helping others as much as he could (fictional story, yes I know) - he gained a lot of help from like-minded people. Seriously, I think it will most likely play out very similar in "real life".

In this story, he also would interview newcomers to see if they had any skills to bring to the group before deciding to take them in and feed them. Otherwise - he sent them down the road with some food and water if they asked. I think that's a pretty intelligent way of handling it.

So, guess I have a bit of a different outlook on things since reading that - and security (firearms, ammo and people who know some war tactics) would have a large initial importance to me.

Of course I already distrust FEMA, the Gov and anything resembling either - so I would try to block off an area with a larger group of people to defend before I'd ever head to a shelter. Anyone with usable skills would be welcome - but as in the story - you would have to be real cautious of everyone you brought in that you didn't already know. Even those you DO know could turn real loopy in a heartbeat.

Think of some of the murders where neighbors don't have a clue till the murderer has been caught.

Very interesting read - I suggest if you haven't already read it to check it out.

Thanks!
