inthmtns Missoula/Kalispell, its all Commiefornia now. A beautiful part of our state ruined by the influx of out-of-staters and greedy real estate agents.

BigStick We've been in Kalispell for a number of years (not from California 🙂 ) and would never live anywhere else. There is a bitter divide between the native Montanas and the many people o have relocated from California as many of them came with money and built large but not sensible homes and drove prices into he stratosphere. When e moved here I looked for a rental home while I looked for property and the cheapest I could find that I was willing to live in (cleanliness and safety wise) was $1,200 a month.

Housing is expensive, childcare is very expensive, our home and average was about 70% more expensive than comparable property in the Midwest. Jobs between minimum wage and executive are very hard to come by; I would recommend the same thing a native Alaskan told me when e ere moving there - come here with a job, don't come and then try to find a job.

Contact the school board, see if you can contact teachers here through social media (if you do that sort of thing) to establish dialogue, and s in any other place, ignore hose who choose to be ignorant without ven trying o get to know you - it will save you time, money, and eartache when you identify people you will it be able to count on that early.

Bottom line: Whitefish is beautiful but a resort community with everything that goes with that; Columbia falls is retty it too 1st out of the way for me personally; Kalispell is he best place I have ever lived...and I'm old so I have lived a lot of places. Good luck.

I'm sure they could use all the anti-socialist educators they can get.

I get it but the funny thing is my Uncle who has his place up West of Kalispel said that there is a very good chance that the people who told me to "go home" were probably from California originally. I didn't find it interesting that none of them said it to me. Must not have had the nads to do so as they surely had to see me getting in my truck and the associated plates on the bumpers.

John Parker I live in Missoula as well. Teachers with a Bachelor's degree start between $32-38 per year. From what I hear, they don't hire many teachers with Master's degrees, as they don't want to pay for it. Have you looked at Wyoming? They start folks out in the 50's, Master's in the 60-70's. No state income tax, most sales tax is right around 4%, great place to be. Kalispell area (as well as Missoula and Bozeman) have become mini-Californias. Though, there is a Chik-fil-A in Kalispell...

munik I live in Missoula.
I am not sure but I don't think teaching pays all that great but I am friends with a high school math teacher and he seems to do just fine: normal house, decent vehicles, decent boat...
Kalispell area is nice...depends on how far you want to commute is how I would start looking at land/houses online

Big Blzn We have been vacationing in MT for the past 6 summers. Going to different areas to see the sites each summer. Kalispel area was last summer and it was beautiful. Had a cabin down near Big Fork. Kalispel area was the first time we had two different occasions when individuals told my wife and kid and then my father in law to "Go back to phucking California." We drive on our trips and have CA plates on my big truck. Luckily for them i didn't hear the comments or things would not have faired well for them.

Places to look for land, depended on budget, would be out off highway 2, West of Kalispel. SHould be a bit less expensive out that way. My uncle has a nice place about an hours west of Kalispel on Upper Thompson Lake. Beautiful area.

If you are looking for work in a school system id probably look down near Missoula but absolutely not live within the city limits of Missoula. Quite frankly, id look to see what it would take to get on at Univ of Montana as an instructor of some sort if you are already in education. MIssoula has become very liberal so living within the limits would not be my choice.

WoodHavenHunter We are looking in that area because there is the general area where there is the highest chance of jobs for us.

Aerindel I live about 80 miles south...which by MT standards make Kalispell the next town over.

I've never lived there. Lots of people I know live in the area. Seems to have problems with gentrification from what I hear but this is true of most MT cities, lots of rich cali's moving in and pacifying the west.

FincaCazador According to the book "Strategic Relocation" by Joel Skousen, you would be better served by locating to Whitefish or Columbia Falls, but he doesn't say why in the book.

Me, I like warmer climates. I believe we are going into some cooler weather, so I went south.

WoodHavenHunter Anyone have a good line on real estate out there? Ideally looking for something butting up to some protected lands, and at least 10 acres. Which gives me enough room to make another shooting range, raise the family etc...

mantismula1 Montana is part of the Reason States and a good choice.Lots of good people on this site and in the Kalispell area.Dont know how easy it is to get into the school system. It could be tough like some other areas that I know of in our Western half.Good luck.Just do it.

Contemplating a move

My wife and I have vacationed many times in the Kalispell area, and she has some distant relatives that live there. We are contemplating a move to the area. What do the natives have to say? We are both in education. How is the school system? Is there decent housing available? Would like to end up with a small place on some land somewhere.
