For this to work, you can not repeat posts. The point of this exercise is to prioritize gear in a BOB, so your cooperation would be appreciated.
Good, fixed handled hunting knife.

One Piece of gear

my backpack because I keep it ready all the time and it is handy and has everything I need to last at least 2 months if need be plus what I can kill or catch near my home when I hit the woods which are only less than 100 yards away from my back door. Throw a a bridle and saddle on the horse my backpack and I am gone and if need be I can eat the horse if I have to if it came to it especially in the winter and good strong horse will provide at least 3 months of meat in an emergency. Mobile food. If you have two pack mules to go also you still have transportation and food if needed.

ISS M4 AR-15, and the stabilization rig I carry them in. It carries six 30 rd magazines, my P-14 and three mags, compass, and one gallon of pure water. It will get me to where ever I want to be, within 60 miles, and take care of whatever zombie control I would be involved in enroute.

Damn sure wouldn't give them a knife.

If a brain was only thing needed, why do people drive and text, everyone has a brain?
True everyone has a brain, not everyone uses it however. If you have a knife you can make shelter, traps for food, and on and on. all you really need is a knife and knowledge. The rest is just extra.

Jash The one thing I'll pick is my BOB/GHB. There, ONE thing. Although it's chock full of other stuff too like water, food, shelter, firestarting gear, water purification gear, some clothes and other things that make surviving a short term SHTF scenario much more survivable.

Eugene I'd say my Backpack, yes its a duplicate of one of the first posters, but my pack is a camebak so its water and gear container so it combines two pieces of gear into one. if I had to take just it empty I could fill it with water and gear I find along the way.
