For some of us, we don't even know where can we buy the antiviral medication. Some of us plan to isolate ourselves during a pandemic as that's all we're capable of. So, any advanced info in helping us to decide when to shelter-in-place might be the only way to deal with it... at least for my family since we have no medical knowledge
I missed it earlier but @breach_and_clear has started a thread here:
https://www.survivalistboards.com/sho...d.php?t=704954

Anything else i have to add i will pop on their thread .
I am glad that it has been brought up here as this "may be" a serious threat in the next year or 3.
It may just be a blip that comes to nothing but from the recent UNPUBLISHED studies i have read on different company servers it is more than likely going to be H7N9 that gives us the next major scare.
I am not a doctor neither is my partner but we (well i did,she continues) to do studies and trials for most of big pharma companies around the world ,while in itself not a big deal it does often allow us to view their company servers and get insight to what is going on in different parts of the world.

11evilace11 With all due respect i see that many here were trying to gauge where the USA was on the WHO pandemic scale and some suggest stage 3 and that the countries with active Ebola were at stage 5 or 6?
You are all wrong as this was not a pandemic and never had the chance to be,so none of the countries were on the WHO pandemic scale/stages.
I know this is well after the point but a fast killing disease such as Ebola is never going to take off in a country with proper health care.
I only stated reading this thread as i have been following the 5th wave of H7N9 in China and while it is not as movie grade as Ebola we should all be worried.
Both my partner and i work for many of the major Pharmaceutical companies on the planet and H7N9 in the next few years is going to have the potential to kill MILLIONS.
It is not getting that much press yet this wave of infection has been much larger than in the past and Human to human transmission is increasing with each new wave.
When this one hits then the WHO pandemic stages will come into play as it will travel the globe in a short time.
The best thing i would suggest is that people get a course of antivirals for everyone in the family oseltamivir is still the gold standard, zanamivir is not recommended for many and its ability to prevent infection is limited ( not talked about much).
Antibiotics on hand and an understanding of how they work is essential as many of the the deaths from H7N9 are the result secondary bacterial infections.
I know it is all well and good to type this and think that it will reach people ,,but i know that only a couple will bother to check how crazy i am.
Please be one of the people to check out the current H7N9 threat if only to come back and tell me i am FULL OF IT

emh1701 I would say the U.S. is somewhere between 3 and 4 right now. Call it 3.5 if you want to. It wouldn't surprise me if we are at stage 4 in the next 2-3 months.

Africa is a large continent. I would say that Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are at Stage 5....and getting to Stage 6 (cases declining with no new cases for 42 - 60 days) will be very difficult. A clue lies in the recent (like the last 24 hours) where President Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia was telling the media that Liberia was stabilizing, but the WHO countered with its statement that Liberia is just as bad as it was last week, not stabilizing and may not begin to stabilize next week.

The United States...Stage 3, with caveats: "Ensure that mechanisms exist so that imminent potential human health threats can be recognized and dealt with; coordinate timely interventions that will reduce the risk of a pandemic."

The quoted portion is under National Objectives for Phase 3. As we have seen the transparency of the CDC is not present. In fact, observing the CDC's statements and actions makes one envision an opaque barrier to information designed to make Americans more prepared for a serious Ebola epidemic.

IMMHO, the federal agencies are going to have a tough time getting cooperation from some states because of how the "illegal immigrant children" issue was handled. Therefore, I expect more states to assert their power (legitimate or not) when it comes to public health issues. Like getting an independent lab or state lab to run the blood tests first before submitting the sample(s) to the CDC.

If that happens, Phases 5 and 6 will be tougher for the federal agencies to co-ordinate things in a "top-down" manner.

Just my .02. Your mileage may vary.

But wait, there’s more….”such measures would include enhanced surveillance and use of non pharmaceutical public health interventions and consideration of a possible deployment of global intervention stockpile”….
But…they did not seem to do any of the above. Did they 'consider' the possible deployment of global intervention stockpiles and decide, “nah”…. Note: the stockpile was defined later as including PPE, technical assistance and lab diagnostics. They DEFINITELY could have used that.
Phase 6: Pandemic phase. The WHO’s objective:” To serve as official global source and focal point for credible information related to the pandemic.” HA! Why are they waiting until the Pandemic phase? I guess once they officially announce Phase 6, they are going to start giving out credible information. That will be a welcome change.

"...global intervention stockpile..." And where is that stored, exactly? When folks started to point out that WHO had dropped the ball when MSF and Samaritan's Purse/SIM got overwhelmed, numbers spiraled, yada, yada... What was the answer? Oh, their budget was cut a few years ago and they didn't have enough staff, medical supplies, blah, blah....we rely on member states' for our budget. Me thinks this 'global intervention stockpile' was as mythical as the 3 magic beans Jack got for trading his cow.

2nd bold: I asked the same question myself. The only answer I can come up with is: it's not about "global health," it's about control.

Something else that I kept on noticing and just noticed again in the National Response document linked above...they keep saying that they will coordinate CONSISTENT messages from phase 2 on. "Work with partners to promote consistent messages to promote personal safety and public health.” We are definitely seeing a ‘consistent’ message.
Consistent message or not, the tourist industry for Africa has dried up, even to places with no Ebola cases at all. The 2009 'flu epidemic crushed the airline industry (people-side, not cargo-side), so WHO has swung back in the other direction. On top of that, their WFP is on a respirator, so naturally they want trade for foodstuffs to continue to Africa.

There's an imaginative part of my brain repeating JustMe11's "DoomyDoomDoomDoom" phrase.

I was thinking that we had substantial trade and travel links with those countries considering 10,000 of them just showed up for school this semester (I believe that is the number that I read on the monster post)...

The recommendations for national authorities to subdivide certain levels at the national level to reflect the national situation. It is suggested to subdivide phases 2-5 according to whether the country is affected (or has significant trade or travel links with an affected country) or is not affected.

It is also suggested to subdivide phase 6, the pandemic phase according to whether the country is affected (or has significant trade or travel links with an affected country) or is not affected, whether the wave of infection has subsided or whether it is experiencing a subsequent wave.

How many flights/visitors/ships need to come here before it would be deemed significant?

Mariel This may be their official documented plan but I don't think that anyone currently involved in the Ebola level 6 Pandemic has even read it.

In the summary of changes since the 1999 plan: “Focusing greater attention on earlier phases when rapid containment may contain or delay the spread”…..
Well, thank God, it’s not 1999…would they still be drinking mimosas and reading the paper about now???
But wait, there’s more….”such measures would include enhanced surveillance and use of non pharmaceutical public health interventions and consideration of a possible deployment of global intervention stockpile”….

More highlights: Phase 6: Pandemic phase. No longer feasible to trace contacts. Voluntary quarantine (such as home monitoring) of healthy contacts is a no in phase 6 as well.
Restriction of travel to and from affected area in phase 6: Pandemic Phase: No. "Enforcement of travel restrictions considered impractical in most countries but likely to occur voluntarily when risk appreciated by the public”
Cordon Sanitaire: No for all phases. “Enforcement considered impractical”

Measures for travelling from affected countries: separate sick passengers if possible and give masks to all travelers upon embarkation. Wait…earlier in the document, they did NOT advise masks for any of the phases including phase 6, of an Influenza epidemic. Their comment on masks “Not proven to be effective. Permitted but not encouraged.”

This document highlights for me how ridiculous the WHO has responded in light of the Ebola epidemic that I don’t think that I can stand to read anymore. It explains why they have been so adamant about not closing the border or issuing travel restrictions. Paravani is referring to the United States of America, specifically. However, I think it's safe to say that our main allies: Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania are more or less in the same boat. However, Australia's media are more straight-up with the information they put out about conditions on the ground in west Africa. I'm not sure if they've "crossed the Rubicon" to inform Australian citizens about CIDRAP's assertion that medical personnel treating Ebola patients should have the highest level of breathing equipment.

Over on the monster discussion thread, I posited that we (mainly in the U.S.) are seeing the WHO go 'off script' from this 2005 paper addressing a 'Flu pandemic. The CDC seems to still be in "we-will-bring-this-outbreak-under-control-please-be-patient" mode. The next six months to a year are certainly going to be interesting, and not in a good way.

prudens-entis I follow the Organic prepper's blog and here is a link to a great article about Ebola, CDC instructions to Hospitals and some very good prepping advice.
http://www.theorganicprepper.ca/when...-real-09152014

Personally I think we shouldn't wait for CDC or any organization to issue an official report of Pandemic level, before we start prepping for Ebola outbreak. We must have enough preps to see us through an extended lockdown, if it comes down to that.

If we lucky and Ebola skips our Countries, then at least we will have preps for when the next pandemic hits the world, be it SARS or whatever. The preps will not go to waste.
