The Saint I am a firm believer of prepping what you eat.

It never fails to amaze me how many newbie’s will buy 100 pounds of rice only to admit in passing that neither they or their kids really like rice, red beans, etc...

I have found that most things purchased at the store have a two year shelf life, now depending on the conditions of the storage this might be extended several years.

You can also extend that time by repackaging certain items in food savers or Mylar and tossing it into the freezer or canning it.

Meat and butter are things some people would never consider canning but you can and it will extend their shelf life a considerable length of time.

Our goal is to prep and rotate preps so that nothing goes bad. Just my opinion but I hate wasting money and food.

I'll have to get some pics for you. I designed it myself and I have to say it turned out really well. I put in a wine refrigerator. I really like it. I let my electrician do what he thought was good for the lighting and he did a great job.

Well congrats Buffy on the remodeling job!

My DW wants me to do our kitchen this fall. I plan to build the cabinets myself, she is stuck on either cherry or Hickory. This should be a fun project, I have several ideas how to put in a few wine racks here and there. I think lighting is key to making everything look good!

I could never get Ramen to last a year in it's factory package either. I'm in a hot area though. I've heard from folks in cooler regions who said theirs lasts well. Either that or they're not able to smell rancidity. That's actually more common than most people believe.

A criticism. I think you are mistaking people giving opinions and information as just criticism. Sometimes it might appear that way when somebody has posted a "Do not do that" response. Like everything you encounter you should weigh the information someone gives and see if it valid.

I am not attacking you by responding to your post. I am presenting a alternative viewpoint for you to consider or dismiss. Yes there are some who are not great at presenting their views. Some are just plain wrong. Others use deliberate character assassination and think that is a valid way to win the debate.

I agree 100%. There is always something to learn.

You asked about better options than just leaving stuff sitting around in the factory packaging. Rather than start yet another conversation on mylar/O2 absorbers, etc., in a thread where it doesn't belong, I simply suggested browsing the board for those better options. Take it how you well. It was meant with good intentions.

Suggesting that attempting to keep foods long term in the factory packaging which is not designed for it, is not a good idea, is justifiable criticism.

Buffy My next project is to get a current inventory. I've just finished remodeling the kitchen and things are not as organized as they should be because I kept moving things around and a lot of stuff went to off-site storage.

CB54 I have browsed the board, for a couple of years now, and found alot of good info, I know your 20K+ posts must make you a guru, in your mind, but all it tells me is you have waaayyy to much time on your hands.

There is always something to learn, both good and bad, from anyone that takes the time to post something, it's just folks always criticize. Maybe it comes from a lack of maturity, since I see your a relative babe in woods still.

I'm not some noob either. I've been prepping for 30+ years and being debt free the last 7 years has allowed me to greatly improve the size of all aspects of my prepping , both inside and outside on my farm.

Like I said before, I so tired of the criticisming everyone is so quick to dish out. Go ahead and attack me if you feel froggy. I'll not respond, becasue I got better things to do than get in a ****ing contest with a skunk.

dealfinder500 I wonder how much of that they will end up throwing out? It's kind of sad. They have the means to do it much better - I mean all of that is all brand-name food (looks like they shop at Sam's). Some Mylar and o2 absorbers and buckets and they'd be set for a lot of it. It is very nice organization though.

Hopefully some of the above commenters will share their preparations with us. Everyone always knows better than the next person. I've been taught never to criticize unless I've got a better option, so maybe we'll see how it's suppose to really be done by the above experts.

It has been shown before. It's a great primer in how NOT to store food.

Exactly. People who just store things in the factory packaging can expect them to go bad. They're not packaged for long shelf lives from the factory because they don't need to be. This is a mistake I've seen a lot of preppers make. Food storage is too important and expensive to try and save a couple bucks on mylar and O2 absorbers.

And every one I've seen make this mistake, ended up regretting it later on. But of course they aren't willing to learn from the mistakes of others, so they have to pee on the electric fence for themselves to figure it out.

MattB4 Interesting video. Just did not seem like a whole bunch of thought went into the purchasing and usage of items. Ideally you should use things at a rate that your products do not go bad. I agree. A lot of the stuff needed to be re-packaged and that didn't happen. If it were, it would have lasted much longer.

goose3 I've seen that before. It seems as if they didn't pay much attention to what they stored, nor why.

It reminds me of hoarders who just keep stuff to keep stuff.
