  1. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
Hello Everyone... This is my first post. I tried to search my first question as not to be redundant but I could not find a thread to this question. If there is one please point me in the right direction. My Question... Can I use the square plastic walmart bins to store my gallon sized mylar...
  2. Food and Water
I had a thought today as I was feeding the cats. Their litter comes in a plastic bucket that looks just like this other than color and the brand marking. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/FOOD731-1.html Does it seem viable to clean it out, take some food, put them in the leftover container, throw...
  3. Food and Water
Sorry if this topic has been covered a million times. I've tried searching and can't find the answers. I sealed 10 five gallon buckets of beans, rice, sugar, etc. in mylar bags over the weekend. Only 2 or 3 of the bags sealed very tight, shrunk up with no air inside. The other buckets still...
  4. Food and Water
This may be a dumb question but here goes. If I am using mylar bags to line the buckets then do the buckets need to be food grade? I would assume not since the material is enclosed in the bag and not in contact with the bucket. Thanks for the input.
  5. Food and Water
Hey guys, I am proposing a food storage challenge here. For those who are getting started prepping, this is for you. Challenge: Store one 5 gallon sealed bucket of food a week for 12 weaks. It is not as hard as it sounds. You do need to get a few things. Oxygen Absorbers, Mylar bags, and...
  6. Food and Water
Hi all, been lurking here for awhile and finally set up an account. I'm going full steam ahead trying to get my family to a place where I feel comfortable. I've done numerous searches, but either find partial, conflicting, or non-relevant info when looking for some answers to basic long term...

Is storing 5gallon bags of food a bad idea? I mean lets say EOTWAWKI comes along and its time to get out some beans and rice. I'll want some bread too. Can i use that much of each product before its gone bad? I suppose if its all i'm eating i'll go threw it quickly. Maybe this is an entirely...

I have read several things about using buckets but what is the difference in "food grade" and just plain ole buckets? couldn't you use regular buckets to store things that are still in their original packaging, not touching the buckets?
  9. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
Hey All, I have started buying food grade buckets to make my own superpails. I bought some from USPlastics. I bought the premium buckets that ran $5.50 each. pretty pricey when you throw in lid at another $1. Those were .9 mm thick. I just noticed they offer FDA approved standard buckets...

I cannot find a site that states the guidelines for how long a bag of dried beans and a pack of rice will store if sealed in an airtight container in a 70is temp room. Any sites you can suggest on foods to store and how to actually seal them to extend life of storage? Im new to all of this and...

I have acquired some 5 gallon buckets from Dunkin Donuts and purchased mylar bags and O2 absorbers. I have some food (rice, sugar) already and have an order from LDS coming for many things (wheat, oatmeal, potato flakes, etc). I think I read on this forum a thread talking about storing several...

I'm not sure where to put this, please move it to the right place if it needs it. I'm not involved with it, either - just passing a deal on. I found a guy selling 55 gal steel drums with lids for $8 and 55 gal plastic drums for $10ea. Both are food grade. The steel barrels contained honey or...
  14. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
I found the thread a while back, but I can't anymore. I got some 5 gal food grade buckets and lids from chic-fil-a. They were used for pickles. What's the best way to get the pickle scent out/ clean and disinfect the bucket for use in storing and possible wine making? again, sorry for the...

If one is storing grains or whatever in sealed mylar bags inside 5 gallon buckets, why would it matter if the buckets were 'food grade' or not, since the grain is insulated from the plastic?

I've put up about 100 lbs of wheat, beans, spelt, using 1-gallon mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. These are stored in totes in a closet. I can see right now that I'm going to run out of closet space long before I get all the bulk pack stuff that I want in my preps. I need to find another...

I just got a great deal on some recycled food grade buckets that stored frosting/ice cream. I've got a bunch of 2 gallon and 3.5 gallon. What size mylar bags would work best? Thanks
  18. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
Having a big family and knowing that we use a lot of milk, I was thinking that I should include some 6 gallon buckets of powdered milk in my preps. I would like to do this the most cost effective way possible. My local Sams does not sell powdered milk. My local Walmart sells a 64 oz box for...

Sorry if this is in the wrong place I have access to many buckets for storage but they contained hydraulic oil 1st  I didn't think it would be a good idea to use them for food storage but my nephew didn't think it would be a problem. I am just getting ready to purchase a bunch but if...

This weekend, I'm going to make up my first long-term food stores. I have the mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, and desiccant, and I've trained up on how to properly use all of these together. If I use mylar bags with O2 absorbers and desiccant, can I just use a new flimsy-style bucket with lid...
