  1. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
Hello Everyone... This is my first post. I tried to search my first question as not to be redundant but I could not find a thread to this question. If there is one please point me in the right direction. My Question... Can I use the square plastic walmart bins to store my gallon sized mylar...

Often the advice is given to ask at your local bakery / grocery store for the 3 1/2 to 5 gallon food grade plastic buckets they get frosting, dough, and deli items in from distributors, because after those buckets are emptied the store will usually just throw them away; and by asking you can...

I found some at Lowes this weekend. Really nice white heavy duty buckets. It says they are food grade.
  4. Food and Water
Sorry if this topic has been covered a million times. I've tried searching and can't find the answers. I sealed 10 five gallon buckets of beans, rice, sugar, etc. in mylar bags over the weekend. Only 2 or 3 of the bags sealed very tight, shrunk up with no air inside. The other buckets still...
  5. Food and Water
This may be a dumb question but here goes. If I am using mylar bags to line the buckets then do the buckets need to be food grade? I would assume not since the material is enclosed in the bag and not in contact with the bucket. Thanks for the input.
  6. Food and Water
Hi all, been lurking here for awhile and finally set up an account. I'm going full steam ahead trying to get my family to a place where I feel comfortable. I've done numerous searches, but either find partial, conflicting, or non-relevant info when looking for some answers to basic long term...

I've seen many different posts (and when you google it you find many different answers) about this, some say yes, some say, maybe, some say used to be. Others have said they have called and were told yes (no offense, but I'd rather see for myself). I've stopped at 5 different Wal-marts on a...

I used to work with this guy named John. We were never close friends but got along well enough. In the ten years since we both quit working for the same company, we've kept in touch since our kids go to school together. It finally dawned on me late last week that he is a manager at a local...
  9. Food and Water
Is storing 5gallon bags of food a bad idea? I mean lets say EOTWAWKI comes along and its time to get out some beans and rice. I'll want some bread too. Can i use that much of each product before its gone bad? I suppose if its all i'm eating i'll go threw it quickly. Maybe this is an entirely...

I have read several things about using buckets but what is the difference in "food grade" and just plain ole buckets? couldn't you use regular buckets to store things that are still in their original packaging, not touching the buckets?
  11. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
Hey All, I have started buying food grade buckets to make my own superpails. I bought some from USPlastics. I bought the premium buckets that ran $5.50 each. pretty pricey when you throw in lid at another $1. Those were .9 mm thick. I just noticed they offer FDA approved standard buckets...

I cannot find a site that states the guidelines for how long a bag of dried beans and a pack of rice will store if sealed in an airtight container in a 70is temp room. Any sites you can suggest on foods to store and how to actually seal them to extend life of storage? Im new to all of this and...

  14. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
I found the thread a while back, but I can't anymore. I got some 5 gal food grade buckets and lids from chic-fil-a. They were used for pickles. What's the best way to get the pickle scent out/ clean and disinfect the bucket for use in storing and possible wine making? again, sorry for the...
  15. Food and Water
If one is storing grains or whatever in sealed mylar bags inside 5 gallon buckets, why would it matter if the buckets were 'food grade' or not, since the grain is insulated from the plastic?
  16. Disaster Preparedness General Discussion
So my local bakery has been kind enough to save all their food grade buckets for me and thus far hasn't questioned why I continue to pick up an average of 10 per week although I am starting to get some looks lol. I've gotten quite a few 1 gal and a couple 5 gal buckets and I'd like to start...

I've put up about 100 lbs of wheat, beans, spelt, using 1-gallon mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. These are stored in totes in a closet. I can see right now that I'm going to run out of closet space long before I get all the bulk pack stuff that I want in my preps. I need to find another...

I just got a great deal on some recycled food grade buckets that stored frosting/ice cream. I've got a bunch of 2 gallon and 3.5 gallon. What size mylar bags would work best? Thanks
